If you're figuring out what skill to learn, I will convince you that online writing is the highest-leverage skill.
If we break down the building blocks of "writing,” the primary ingredient is words, which carry a stored form of energy (information). Crafting these words together can evoke specific emotions and spread ideas at scale online.
This is incredibly powerful as it enables a few things:
The ability to garner attention online
Developing a skill that will improve other areas of life
Ease of learning vs. other high-leverage skills
Let's dive in.
Garnering Attention
Attention is the most valuable commodity in the modern world.
Grabbing attention is a highly valuable skill as it unlocks unforeseen opportunities and opens doors.
The distribution channel of social media platforms unlocks massive opportunities.
Keystone Skill
Writing is a keystone skill: something that improves other skills in your life.
Writing well will make you a better communicator. I am pursuing building an audience, content creation, and stand-up comedy.
All of which require the ability to write well and understand different structures.
Low Investment
Writing online has a low barrier to entry.
It requires almost no capital investment and takes little time to improve compared to high-leverage skills like coding.
You likely have "taste" from browsing and can identify why you click on certain things; thus, you only need to develop the ability to reproduce this.
Ultimately, the skill is not just the ability to write, but understanding what makes people tick.
Over the next 30 days, I plan to write daily about mental models, Web3 deep dives, and more. The common thread will be my learning journey.
Come along with me on this journey—and let me know if you have any questions!
