My favorite apps

The next list of favorite apps, none from Big Tech, might change anytime. If you wonder what Web2 and Web3 are, you may find this article useful.

Feel free to suggest any apps you love that are not listed herein.

Web Browsers

  • Brave

Privacy- and security-focused, the fastest, and with built-in tools like news feed or web3 self-custodial wallet.

Search Engines

  • Brave Search

    Fully private and anonymous.

Independent built-from-scratch index (no dependence from big tech).

Social Media

A great open-source one is yet to come 😄. Either decentralized, or non-profit and privacy-focused like Signal (but with the ability to meet like-minded people). Looking forward to testing

  • Bluesky Social

Based on the open-source AT protocol for decentralized social networking.

The app and protocol were developed by Bluesky, PBLLC, a company owned by (i) Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter (resigned in 2021), (ii) Jeremie Miller, inventor of XMPP, and (iii) Jay Graber, its first CEO.

Office / Collaboration

Messaging / Calling

All are privacy-focused but only Signal ensures a strong end-to-end (E2E) encryption yet. E2E encryption is currently an optional feature on Brave Talk and Meet Jitsi, not a default one, and work is being done to improve its robustness. Brave Talk is based on the open-source Jitsi software.

  • Signal

  • Brave Talk

You need to install Brave browser to set a meeting, but you can attend one from any browser if you have the invitation link.

  • Meet Jitsi

Non-custodial digital wallets (also called "self-custodial") are the only ones you should ever use, because only you have access to the funds and transaction-related data. Moreover, you dont need to provide any personal ID or contact to own such wallets. All wallets below are non-custodial.

  • Skiff Mail

    Decentralized and end-to-end encrypted.

  • Mailfence

    Privacy-focused with optional end-to-end encryption.

  • Travala

Book hotels, flights, and tours worldwide using fiat or 80+ cryptocurrencies.

Haven´t tried yet, but hopefully will. Check app reviews here.

  • DeepL

    AI-based translator.

The desktop app allows you to select any text anywhere, and translate it into some target language by pressing CTRL+C+C.

  • Ludwig

Sentence search engine that helps you write better English by giving you contextualized examples taken from reliable sources.

The desktop app allows you to select any text anywhere, and search for similar phrases by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+L.
