As a science minded individual, you may be allergic to all things remotely woo-woo... and what I'm driving at is readily explainable by the statistical preponderance of maladies among westerners. What I'm pointing at, as a lover of randomness, is the coincidence.
When George Michael died of essentially was his heart giving out, all I could think about was how arguably his most memorable songs were heart-centric.
Heart beat, heart beat,
Why do you fail me now?
You hurt me, desert me,
In my darkest hour
Heartbeat, heartbeat,
Why do you keep me here?
In fact-checking myself, I saw conflicting lyrics that say "Why do you bear me now?" but I've always heard it as "fail." You can decide for yourself:
So yeah, one song, big deal. Heart disease is the leading killer of males in the UK as of 2015 (below and according to this article.)
Then to take it a step further, what is another Wham! lyric that comes to mind? Mine was from Last Christmas:
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
So there is that.
Coincidences are just that. Something strange is rarely more than that. It is just as special and notable that something coincidental happened. At very least, coincidence makes life interesting.
At very least, I don't know if this is shining a light on coincidences or rather an epidemic of heart disease. Before I write this off and put it to bed in my head, I'll add the Tom Petty of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fame was found unconscious and in cardiac arrest before he died.
Or maybe the real takeaway is that years of hard living and drug abuse takes a toll on people's bodies. Probably, this, if anything.
