Happy Friday!
This week, we looked at a recent announcement by the Lagos State government to ban, among other things, single-use plastic as a means to deal with a waste problem that is spiralling out of control. This wouldn't be the first time a policy was put in place ... and failed to deliver.
As our Trinity Morphy points out, bans are tricky. They often economically alienate one segment of a society to benefit another. If Lagos State has any hope of tackling its waste crisis, it has to approach the problem from a socioeconomic angle, not just a political one.
This is where ReFi has a role to play. Nigeria is one of the most advanced countries in terms of incentivising people to collect, sort, and recycle through private token schemes. The likes of Wasset are proving that there is a path forward for proper waste management.
