Happy Friday!
First up, a bit of housekeeping.
We've teamed up with ReFi DAO to expand the reach of The ReFi Recap. Starting Monday, December 9th, Trinity Morphy will bring you all of the happenings in the ReFi space on the ReFi DAO blog and newsletter.
In it's place, we'll turn our focus to deeper analysis of the ReFi space, the impact its making, and CARBON Copy updates.
We hope you enjoy the new setup!
This Week: In Search of Data
In our quest to integrate impact data to CARBON Copy for our impact dashboard and project profile pages, we repeatedly find ourselves facing the same problem: there isn't much data available.
There are so many projects doing great work, but so few of them make their data available. For the transparency that blockchain supporters espouse, this isn't a good look for an sector looking to make a name for itself. If anything, the default should be fully transparent and available data so that we can build the next DeFi ReFi Llama.
It's worth noting that ReFi projects aren't like your typical blockchain-based projects. The data doesn't live exclusively on-chain like it does for, say, decentralised finance (DeFi). The reality is that only some of the activity is tracked on-chain. The rest, if it's even tracked, is stored off-chain.
Why aren't projects making their data available? From what we can tell, the main blocker is technical. It requires some level of technical expertise to fire up an API and start streaming data. When your core focus is impact, you're not thinking data first (and understandably so). Tools that make this easier for projects would be greatly appreciated.
At the same time, there are projects operating mostly on-chain that either haven't published their smart contract addresses or haven't created Dune queries in the interests of transparency. (For those that have, we thank you 🙏).
Moving forward, we in ReFi have to get a lot more forthcoming with our data so that we can build the tools that help "outsiders" understand the work we're doing.
