Happy Friday!
In case you missed it, the president of Celo Foundation made a prediction earlier this week:
The optimism is refreshing after a two-year bear market. A crypto media star in 2022, ReFi more or less fell off the radar when tokenised carbon credit projects failed to fix carbon markets (an unrealistic expectation to begin with). The idea that it could re-enter even the crypto/Web3 consciousness is intriguing!
Interestingly, as Rene alludes to, the reason for a potential ReFi rebirth isn't even related to ReFi. It's actually about crypto being a lot easier to use. Apps like Minipay, local stablecoin initiatives like those of Mento Labs, and new wallets like Rainbow are making it possible to interact with the ReFi apps that do exist.
While these improvements are undoubtedly important, there is something else that's different than 2022/23: the diversity of ReFi projects.
Whether Impact DePINs, waste collection incentives, quadratic funding, impact currencies, or green investment instruments, there is so much more that the average person can do to get involved in regeneration.
That said, a lot has to align for ReFi to go mainstream. A sustained bull run would certainly help, but more needs to be done on our side to prove the value of a regenerative mindset. We can't just rely on altruism. At the very least, 2025 promises to see a lot of the work that's be done over the past two years come to fruition.
That's what we're most excited about.
