Proto-Danksharding is the game-changing update to the Ethereum protocol that supercharged Rollups, making them much more efficient and significantly cheaper. In a previous Educational Bite, we covered how Rollups workānow, let's do a quick recap and dive into how Proto-Danksharding with Blobs has revolutionized the landscape.
Recap of Rollups:
Rollups help scale the Ethereum Layer 1 blockchain by performing computations off-chain. They bundle (or "roll up") transactions into a summary and submit this to Layer 1 (L1). Instead of handling and storing all transaction data, L1 only needs to verify and store this compact transaction summary, making the process far more efficient.
The Problem:
Once L1 verifies the rollup data, its purpose is fulfilled. Keeping this rollup summary on the main blockchain indefinitely is like storing an OTP forever after using itāit serves no ongoing purpose. This unnecessary data retention bloats the blockchain and incurs higher costs.
Enter Proto-Danksharding:
Proto-Danksharding introduces a novel conceptāBlobs. These are temporary pieces of rollup data that L1 uses to verify transactions before discarding them. Blobs are essentially "One Time Use" data packets submitted by Rollups to L1.
How It Works:
Blobs Submission: After the update, Rollups submit Blobs to L1 instead of the complete transaction data.
Verification Magic: Using advanced cryptographic techniques, L1 verifies the data availability of the Blob without storing it permanently.
Storage Efficiency: L1 retains the Blob hash (a tiny piece of data representing the Blob) for reference, discarding the full data.
Why This Matters:
Cost Reduction: By eliminating the need to store full rollup data on L1, transaction fees drop significantly. Rollups no longer have to pay high fees to store unnecessary data.
Efficiency Boost: This update lightens the load on Ethereumās main chain, paving the way for faster and cheaper transactions.
The Result:
Proto-Danksharding makes Rollups up to 10x cheaper and more efficient. Itās a win-win: Ethereum gets a leaner, faster blockchain, and users enjoy lower transaction costs.
