How to be somebody

on Farcaster.

I wanted to share some tips on how to be influential on decentralized social networks. Protocols like Farcaster give people a chance to be their most authentic selves and reinvent their identities at the same time. It's an opportunity that should not be taken lightly.

And it might seem daunting for a new user like yourself (and me) that they have to rebuild a social following with strangers, but remembering these few tips will make the process way easier!

  1. Have good character: I believe this is the most important tip. Focus on being the best person you can be for yourself and others. Having good character means developing high-quality traits that you can share with new friends, who will then be excited to tell their friends about you.

  2. Show kindness and understanding: On decentralized social protocols, everyone has a voice, making it incredibly important to listen actively and respond with empathy. Treat every interaction as an opportunity to learn from others and show compassion in your responses. Giving someone your attention is the greatest gift you can offer.

  3. Build genuine connections: Rather than focusing solely on the number of followers or likes, aim to foster meaningful relationships. Each week, take some time to sincerely engage with the content of others, appreciate their unique perspectives, and support their endeavors earnestly.

  4. Share thoughtfully: Contribute positively to the community by sharing content that enriches, educates, or inspires. Consider if what you are sharing could be helpful or uplifting to someone else. If it's adversarial or antagonistic, people are less likely to engage or support you.

  5. Practice patience and humility: Social media can be fast-paced and reactive. One of my favorite things to do on Farcaster is to practice patience both in how quickly I expect responses and in my reactions to others. Admitting when you don’t know a technical detail or acknowledging different viewpoints builds mutual trust and respect. Approach this as a new user, not as your old self.

  6. Encourage others: Every day, someone is releasing, sharing, or promoting something new. Use your voice to uplift and support others, especially those who might not have as large of a following. Celebrating the contributions of others fosters a supportive community that empowers everyone to feel valued and heard.
