Decentralization

Is it possible?

Here is a first post on paragraph, an ultra-fast platform, optimized for SEO and combining the best parts of web2 and web3 for creating content and building a community. Whether Web3 will live up to the many expectations to transform Web2, only time will tell!

At least in the 2000s when I downloaded a little peer to peer software called Napster, the promise of listening to endless music for free was appealing. Music has evolved well over the years between the creation of iTunes, Spotify which has met with success on the mobile form-factor. The proliferation of mobile devices has been the primary catalyst for Web2, with Web3 likely to follow a similar mass adoption curve.

We are now in a few weeks in 2023 with Web3 music platforms which are innovative with different models between Sound, Pianity, Audius etc. to reinvent above all the communities and the remuneration of artists. Many sectors will change this will take time, but for most web2 players they will have no choice but to follow the movement launched!

An example social media

A decentralized social network is a type of social network that does not rely on a single company or organization for its operation and management. Instead, it is managed and controlled by a community of users who actively participate in its development and maintenance. It can be hosted on multiple servers and use blockchain technology to manage data and transactions. This helps create a system that is less vulnerable to attack and disruption because there is no central point of control. Users can also have more control over their data and how it is used.

There are several examples of partial or total decentralized social networks, such as Mastodon, Urbit, Diaspora, Lens, Farcaster, Steemit... These social networks were created with the aim of providing an alternative to centralized social networks such as Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, which have been criticized for their lack of transparency and respect for user privacy, their advertisements, ban people, many spam, etc.

It feels like a change is afoot and chances are the social media landscape will look significantly different in a few years. What you have to understand is that decentralized systems are more difficult to build, and we see this every day, especially with the abuses that certain DAOs have suffered. Over the years centralized alternatives have outperformed decentralized alternatives with better user experiences. Free and advertising may have been the consequence of everything we know today. It turns out there's a lot more money in being the middleman of the global social graph with users who were thrilled to use these free services that provided superior experiences.

Time passes and there is a new willingness on the part of users to bear the cost and move to new networks based on a different set of social and technical ideas.

I publish a watch Web3 newsletter in French, I will put nuggets here :)
