EU's Digital Sovereignty in Jeopardy: Mastodon Server Shutdown Looms

The EU's venture into the Fediverse with its Mastodon and Peertube servers, managed by the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), faces termination as no institution has committed to continuing the project. This initiative, initially a one-year pilot, extended for another year, has 40 EU institutions participating, including the European Commission and the European Court of Justice. Despite the project’s success, with accounts amassing significant followers, the EDPS will cease operations on Saturday.

Uncertain Future for EU Accounts

With the EDPS discontinuing support, the future of these accounts remains uncertain. The European Commission hinted at utilizing Mastodon's portable identities to maintain its presence, yet no concrete plans have been disclosed. This scenario highlights the EU's struggle to sustain digital sovereignty within the Fediverse, raising concerns about the bloc's commitment to decentralized digital platforms.
