Clever Ways to Use a Chest of Drawers

You might think that a chest of drawers is a standard piece of furniture that you can only use in the bedroom to hold clothes. However, it's much more versatile than this; there are many different uses for a chest of drawers. Here are some creative ideas you can utilise around your home.

As a sideboard

Sideboards are practical in hallways to place your keys on, display decorative items and hold things such as gloves and hats if they have a drawer. You can use a chest of drawers in the same way, but it also provides more space for keeping things you often need to hand when you’re about to leave the house. Place a bowl for your keys on top and a nice plant or ornament to decorate your hallway. You can then use the drawers for hats, scarves, gloves, umbrellas, jumpers and anything else you might need in this area. Adding more storage space is a great way to reduce your hallway clutter.

TV stand

If you love your chest of drawers but can’t find a way to use them, why not consider transforming them into a TV stand? You can place your TV on the top, and you’re good to go. If you have a DVD player or games console, you could keep these inside the drawers to reduce clutter. You might need to do a bit of DIY to ensure the wires can reach the back of the TV, but you can easily achieve this with a drill. Another option is to place a chest of drawers underneath a TV that’s mounted on the wall. The top of the drawers can hold your game consoles and DVD players, and you can store games, remote controls, DVDs and more items inside the drawers for easy access.

In the garage or shed

Don’t discard that old chest of drawers you no longer have a use for in your home. A great place to use it is in your shed or garage. You can organise your tools and equipment into the drawers freeing up more space for additional storage. If your chest of drawers is flimsy, you may need to reinforce the base of the drawers to prevent them from breaking under the weight of heavy tools.

In the playroom

Kids have lots of toys that often clutter up the house or their playroom. Parents can use an oak chest of drawers to organise children's toys. If you want your children to be independent and learn how to put away their toys on their own, choose a chest of drawers with easy sliding drawers and one at a height your kids can easily reach. They can also use the top of the chest of drawers to display their favourite toys or games for easy access.

Bedside table

A small chest of drawers can be used as a bedside table. They’re great for storing items you need in the bedroom, and you can use the top for a bedside lamp and nighttime drink. A small chest of drawers offers much more storage than a traditional bedside table with only a single drawer.

In the bathroom

If you have room in your bathroom, a chest of drawers can be a great addition that helps keep things organised and tidy. A chest of drawers, if chosen well, can look great in the bathroom. You can use the storage for all of your vanity products, medication and other essentials you need when you’re in the bathroom.

As a desk space

Add a top to two small chests of drawers, and create a simple desk space with storage. The great thing about this desk space is you can customise the length to make it suitable for your office space. If you only have a small area, add desk legs to the other end of the desk to create a small compact working space with storage.

There are many different uses for a simple chest of drawers; once you get creative, you can find many other uses for this simple but versatile piece of furniture. So think again before you throw out that old chest of drawers.
