StarkNet Essentials: Exploring Braavos Wallet and Its Features

With BROTHER making waves in the meme world, it’s time to revisit the StarkNet ecosystem and what it has to offer.

StarkNet has been quietly shipping updates and building in the background while contributing to the growth of the entire crypto space. Recently, it achieved a new surge in TPS, breaking records and opening up fresh possibilities.

If you’re interested in gaming or are a dev looking to build, check out our latest piece where we cover how StarkNet is powering the on-chain gaming ecosystem.

In this article, we’ll dive into getting started on StarkNet.

Getting Started: Choosing a Wallet

To begin, you’ll need a wallet. You could opt for Keplr, OKX, or other options — and with Kakarot bringing EVM compatibility to StarkNet, MetaMask and Phantom will be available soon as well.

However, for the best experience, I suggest using Argent or Braavos. These wallets are StarkNet-native, with top-notch UX and features like 2FA, 3FA, session keys, daily spending limits, and real-time fraud detection.

Today, let’s focus on Braavos in particular.

How Braavos Came into Being

Crypto is full of friction points — from managing seed phrases and private keys to dealing with clunky interfaces — all of which slow adoption. Recognizing this, Braavos’ founders, veterans from the Web2 world, set out to bring a more intuitive experience to crypto by eliminating these traditional barriers.

Braavos aims to redefine the user journey by simplifying critical processes: onboarding, wallet setup, dApp interactions, security, and even in-wallet investments and purchases.

Why StarkNet?

StarkNet provided an ideal foundation for Braavos, with built-in computation and account abstraction that enabled the team to design a wallet that’s both efficient and user-friendly. StarkNet’s capabilities made it the natural choice for bringing Braavos’ vision to life.

Security Features & user-friendly DeFi tools

The Passkey Signer feature adds an extra layer of 2FA protection to the browser extension, combining something you have (your laptop) with something you are (your biometric identity). This dual-layer security approach simplifies asset management and strengthens protection against unauthorized access, making it particularly effective against phishing and malware. For added flexibility, Braavos allows users to replace biometric authentication with a screen lock password if preferred.

Next, you can turn your smartphone into an advanced hardware wallet secured by Face ID or fingerprint, adding an extra layer of protection even if your seed phrase is compromised. The Hardware Signer is a decentralized two-factor authentication system that leverages the secure subsystem of your mobile device, along with account abstraction, to protect your assets. By activating the Hardware Signer, users gain high-level security, ensuring that their assets remain protected in scenarios like seed phrase theft.

But Braavos doesn’t stop there, for users prioritizing maximum security, it offers the Multi-Signer feature, a decentralized three-factor authentication or 3FA system integrated within the wallet. With a one-click activation, users can maintain full self-custody of their funds while customizing security levels to fit their specific account needs.

The Multi-Signer works alongside the Hardware Signer, combining:

  • Something you know: A password

  • Something you have: A device like a smartphone (hardware signer)

  • Something you are: Biometric data (fingerprint or facial recognition)

This flexible, multi-layered security setup adds robust protection to asset management on Braavos.

The Multi-Owner Account, a secondary account type in the Braavos wallet, is designed to support teams and organizations in managing joint funds securely and efficiently. This setup allows multiple designated owners to manage a shared account, where critical transactions can only be executed once a specified number of owners have provided their signatures. The required number of signatures is customizable to fit the team’s specific needs. However, this feature is not limited to teams alone and can be used by users to build on the security of their existing accounts.

Benefits include:

  • Customizable Security: Each owner can activate decentralized 2FA or 3FA for additional security and can sign transactions from their mobile devices.

  • Independent Gas Fees: The MOA covers its own gas fees.

  • Full dApp Compatibility: MOA users can connect with and use any StarkNet dApp.

The Daily Spending Limit feature allows you to control the security level for transactions based on a customizable threshold. Similar to the tap and pay feature on credit cards, where no PIN is required for small transactions but is prompted for larger amounts, you can set a daily spending limit for your account.

For transactions below the set threshold, you can enjoy low fees, without requiring additional security measures. For larger transactions, Braavos activates extra security features like biometric 2FA through the Hardware Signer, ensuring robust protection.

This flexibility lets you tailor the security level of your transactions based on the amount, balancing ease of use with the necessary protection.

Recently, Braavos integrated with Ledger, a leading hardware wallet provider, allowing users to manage StarkNet accounts directly from their Ledger device. This integration brings an added layer of security, letting users benefit from Braavos’ smart contract features while using Ledger for secure account management.

Each feature reduces friction while adding layers of protection, allowing users to operate seamlessly within a secure, crypto-native wallet.
