Seapunk: The Dolphins of Concrete

Exploring the Vibrant Aesthetic and Cultural Impact of a Digital Subculture

Contrary to popular belief, Seapunk was not initially inspired by mermaids. Let’s break it down. The first hashtag related to Seapunk was posted by the Twitter user @Lilinternet, which brought together the future “creators” of this subculture: @ultrademon and @Zombelle

He used to post ocean scenes featuring occult symbols, yin yang signs, peace symbols, graphic art, and dolphins on his Tumblr, thereby giving Seapunk a unique identity. Contrary to popular belief, Seapunk has no ties to punk style; instead, it is rooted in electronic music.

An Ideology Focused on Positivity

Seapunk encompasses mirrored sunglasses, tie-dye, and vibrant hair colors like green, blue, or purple (no pastel shades).

Dolphins Are Seapunk

Zombelle states, "Mermaids are vicious harpies that lure sailors to their doom," emphasizing that these elements do not belong to the original aesthetic of the style. She pointed out that singer Azealia Banks, also known for promoting the style, mistakenly used mermaids in her music video, which was intended as a provocation. The mermaid-related style is called "mermaiding."

The Visual Aesthetic

Seapunk's visual aesthetic is heavily influenced by internet culture, often incorporating glitch art, vibrant colors, and surreal imagery. This fusion creates a dreamlike underwater world that resonates with its community, celebrating both nostalgia and modernity.

Cultural Impact and Evolution

As Seapunk continues to evolve, it has inspired a variety of artists and designers, pushing the boundaries of fashion and music. This subculture remains a testament to the power of digital creativity, inviting individuals to explore their unique identities while embracing an ever-changing ocean of possibilities.
