The Story Continues...
The Keeper of the Sacred Fire
It was a time before what we can imagine. Humans were not the same animal as we are today. Humans were weak, and defenseless against the other larger beasts and creatures of the world. We would scavenge leftover meat and would occasionally come across the sought after, remains of animals caught and cooked by fire.
It was a dark, wet, and cold time all over the world. All of the other animals on earth at the time were struggling for balance, there was too little fire is most of the world, and too much concentrated in the power of the dark side. The evil fire dragon and a group of giants kept fire hidden in Jotunheim, the land of giants. Fire was hidden in the rocks and deep within the Earths core.
The animals knew that the plants they ate required the cleansing and rejuvenating effects of fire. They instinctually knew that fire was the key to their survival but the fire of the earth was not being managed or shared. Something needed to happen. Somehow they needed to find where the Giants had hidden the fire and bring it back to share with all the other animals.
This is where Fenrir comes into the story. Fenrir was a wise, shaman warrior. He was a Wolf spirit guide for the Viking god Odin. There are all sorts of stories about how Fenrir ended up in Asgard and in an alliance with the gods. Most of the stories have been twisted and changed to make him out to be a villain or dark character. Just like the wolf has been villainized in modern times, so was he going back to the beginning of time.
This is a whole other story, about the very prophecy of Fenrir's coming. How Fenrir became know as the 'Keeper of time and randomness', but also how he led the quest to bring fire to all of the Earth and help make humans the keepers of the flame.
There are stories across the globe in every culture or tribe, variations of this same storyline. This story is about how humans became the species of animal we are today. About how we stole fire and used it for our own.
"Through Fenrir's daring efforts, humanity unlocked the power of fire, forever shifting the balance and igniting the spark of human awareness."- Odin's comments about Fenrir after the successful mission to bring fire to Earth.
For this story, and for most if not all of these stories, it started with a Dream or a Vision. A spark of Awareness was necessary. A thought became reality. This gift of fire came through Fenrir. Or at least, as the story is told in my version of this Viking tale.
