Module 4: Creating Frames

Welcome to Module 4 of Farcaster 101, where we dive into creating interactive frames within Farcaster! In this module, we demonstrate how to create various types of frames—from basic link-sharing to more advanced no-code options and developer-focused guides.

What Are Frames?

A Farcaster Frame is an interactive app that runs directly in the Farcaster social feed. These frames can be used to create rich, in-feed experiences for web applications. Frames play a significant role in creating more dynamic, engaging content on Farcaster, allowing users to interact with content in ways that go beyond simple text posts or images. If you want to learn more about Frames before creating your own, refer back to Module 3 where we introduced Frames and did a deeper dive into the history and technical background on Frames.

Frames Created with Links

We start with the simplest type of frame: frames created by sharing a link. For certain applications that support frames, like Moshicam, Events or Paragraph, you can simply copy a link from their site, drop it into a Farcaster cast, and it automatically transforms into an interactive frame.

We demonstrated in the webinar what it looks like when you cast a moshicam link - a frame is displayed with interactive buttons like “Mint” and “View on Moshi". It’s a great way to create in-feed minting experiences, like offering NFTs directly from your social post.

No-Code Frames

For those who aren’t developers, no-code solutions like Neynar’s Frame Studio offer an easy way to create custom frames without touching a line of code. For example, the State of Farcaster frame by Snickerdoodle was built using Frame Studio. This tool allows you to create custom frames that display dynamic content, slideshows, or even NFTs—all without needing to understand the backend code.

Frame Studio is a fantastic option for brands or creators looking to offer engaging, interactive content to their audience on Farcaster. It’s easy to get started with a minimal fee, and there are plenty of customization options, including image compression, minting with warps, and built-in analytics.

Advanced: Frame Development Guide

For developers looking to create something more unique, Farcaster's Frame Development Guide is your go-to resource. Farcaster offers a fully open and permissionless social graph, which means you can build directly on top of the platform without asking for permission.

The Frame Development Guide walks you through everything from creating basic frames to testing and deploying your creations. If you want to build custom apps that integrate deeply into the Farcaster experience, this guide is essential.

Examples of Frames in Action

In this module, we also covered various examples of frames already being used across the platform:

  • Zora NFTs: You can mint NFTs directly from a frame in your feed, with the transaction happening seamlessly with your connected wallet.

  • Flappy Caster: A fun, interactive game available in-frame, where users can compete for high scores without leaving the app.

  • Paragraph.xyz: Frame integration for blogs and newsletters allows you to share posts that readers can interact with directly within their Farcaster feed.

Composer Actions

We also demonstrated how Composer Actions work, allowing you to create more sophisticated frames by completing actions directly within Farcaster. For example, with the Events composer action, we demonstrated how to create an event and share it with your followers—all within a few clicks.

Use composer actions to create a frame using Events, Bountycaster, Slideshows, and many others
