Daily AI Project | Luma AI, fast 3D models from text and videos

Stay updated for our daily tested AI projects

Basic Info

Luma AI is focused on expanding human imagination and capabilities by building multimodal AI, particularly in generating high-quality, fast 3D models from text and videos.

Their first product is the Luma AI app, which users can use to shoot pictures and generate NeRF captures (Neural Radiance Fields, basically 3D spatial images).

The newest product launched is Genie, a text-to-3D platform.

Market Positioning

Push the boundaries of what consumer AI-generative models and apps can do. Provide new models and apps using those models.

Target User-base

VFX artists, animators, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating realistic 3D models quickly and efficiently. It's designed for users who require rapid prototyping and visual effects, even without extreme accuracy.

User Journey

For the Genie app, users can log in using Google or Apple and start generating 3D objects right away. Generations are fairly quick, less than 30 seconds, but it takes some minutes to turn a creation into high-resolution.

For Luma AI mobile app: the app is in Early Access and available to download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store (if using the same log in method of the Genie app, the account will be the same). Users can log in using Apple or Google and then start generating NeRF captures. The generation can sometimes fail, and it’s recommended to capture with more overlaps and under good lighting. Here a list of best practices from the Luma team.

Users can create lifelike 3D models using a simple app, benefiting from features like quick processing and the ability to capture all reflections. Despite occasional crashes and the need for practice in scanning, the app is highly praised for its quality and potential.

Price / Cost

Luma text-to-3D (Genie) is free to use.

The Luma mobile app is in early access and also free to use (if early access spots are available).

Tech Innovation

Luma AI shines in the 3D generative model space, especially with its tool Genie, which allows for generating interactive 3D assets from text prompts. This innovation is marked by a focus on fidelity, solving challenges like the "Janus problem" (instead of presenting the 3D desired output, the model shows multiple canonical views of an object in different directions) and aiming to improve the speed and visual quality of generations. Luma AI has garnered attention for its effective use of NeRFs (Neural Radiance Fields) and other advanced technologies to tackle issues in photogrammetry, offering solutions for details previously impossible to capture, such as reflective surfaces and transparency.

Others

Luma AI's efforts in the generative AI and 3D modelling space are supported by significant investment, including a $43 million Series B round with participation from a16z, in January 2024. This investment is aimed at further developing their capabilities and expanding their user base, which saw rapid growth with the launch of Genie. The company plans to double its workforce and invest in infrastructure to support the development of more advanced and capable generative AI models.
