Basic Info
Poe AI is an AI chatbot aggregator platform by Quora. Users can create and deploy personalized bots with specific personas, behaviors and task instructions. Users can browse and use other users’ bots.
Market Positioning
Fast, easy-to-use, and personalized chatbots for the creator economy. What makes Quora’s AI chatbots different from the rest of the pack? Quora is trying to develop its own subset of the creator economy based around AI chatbots. So, instead of a creator making a living from YouTube ad revenue, they can try to pay the bills by building interesting AI bots.
Target User-base
Creators. Poe has a creator monetization program lets Poe bot creators get paid. The program compensates creators who bring users to Poe and onboard new subscribers with their bots, and will pay developers a fee per message to their bots. Poe is planning to use the money raised in their latest round ($75M) for that.
User Journey
Log in
Users can log in the web app using Google, Apple, Email, or Phone number.
Create a bot
Users can choose to create a new bot. Bots can be prompt bots or server bots.
Prompt bots: bots that are deployed directly within the Poe platform and only require a prompt to work. These bots are limited in their functionality, and tend to stick to the initial instruction prompt the creator gave. Users can open the create bot page, choosing a profile image, a name and a bot description. Can then define the bot’s behaviors, choosing the model, a prompt, a knowledge base (some documents the bot can refer to for quick and in-depth knowledge of some specific topics/products), and eventually an intro message displayed to the bot’s users.
Server/API bots: bots that are built in Python and then integrated with Poe. Once a bot is created, it can be deployed anywhere. These bots are aimed at more tech-savvy developers who want to run custom code in response to every user message. API bots are more work to set up but offer a lot more flexibility in terms of what can be achieved with them.

Browse and use bots
Users can also browse and use other users-generated bots. Each user has a maximum number of compute points they can use over a set period of time. Each bot displays the number of points required to send a message. This means users have the freedom to choose how you allocate their points: send many messages to higher compute point bots, more messages to less demanding bots, or balance usage across a range of bots. Free-tier users receive compute points daily (currently set at 3000), which reset at the end of each 24-hour period. Points do not accumulate. If in need of more compute points, users can wait for them to renew, or subscribe to receive a higher number of compute points.
Social component
Poe also has a social component. Users can choose to “Share on Poe” as part of the share flow. The selected messages will be copied to a post that will be visible to other Poe users. Users can see their posts on their profile. Similar to social media platforms, users can like a post from another user on Poe. And just like “stories” products on other social media platforms, users can see who view their posts. Users can also follow each other.
Price / Cost
Free version. Poe is free to use in its basic form. This includes some models like ChatGPT 3.5, Mixtral, Claude, Gemini Pro, Claude 100k, Llama 2, MythoMax for text; Playground StableDiffusion XL for image. Also, users on the free version are limited to the number of compute points they get daily.
Subscription ($19.99/monthly, $199.99/yearly) includes:
Exclusive access to GPT-4, Claude-3-Opus, and DALL-E-3.
Use compute points on the bots you want, without daily messaging limits
Gain far more capacity than free users with 1,000,000 compute points per month - at current rates, send up to 50,000 messages to Assistant, 3,000 to GPT-4, or 1,000 to Claude-2-100k
Benefit from faster responses with popular bots
Get early access to new features, including experimental bots like ChatGPT-16k, and GPT-4-32k
Tech Innovation
It is an aggregator of AI models.
Others
Distribution:
Desktop app available on iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows.
Mobile app version available on Play Store and App Store.
Costs: Poe’s intention is to cover all model inference costs and any other significant per-message costs involved in operating any bot on Poe.
Algorithm: In order for a bot to be recommended to other users by Poe, it needs to have a profile picture and a description. The more likely people are to use a bot and continue to use it over time, the more likely Poe will be to recommend it.
Privacy: Poe will not use the responses from bots to train LLMs, nor will it provide bots’ responses to any third party.
Usage: Currently, Poe is one of the top 5 largest generative AI-related properties, and creators have built 1M+ bots on Poe the platform.
Funding: Poe raised a $75 round led by a16z in January 2024.
