Pan Hui |Mobile Augmented Reality

[mks_dropcap style="square" size="55" bg_color="#ffffff" txt_color="#dd3333"]M[/mks_dropcap]obile Augmented Reality (MAR) is widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies in the next ten years. With MAR, we are able to blend information from our senses and mobile devices in myriad ways that were not possible before. The way to supplement the real world other than to replace real world with an artificial environment makes it especially preferable for applications such as tourism, navigation, entertainment, advertisement, and education. In this talk, I will first give an overview of the MAR research in our HKUST-DT System and Media Lab and then I will use two systems that we have developed as examples to illustrate the research challenges that we have to face for our research. These two MAR systems are Ubii – Ubiquitous Interface for Seamless Interaction between Digital and Physical Worlds, and Hyperion – A Wearable Augmented Reality System for Text Extraction and Manipulation in the Air. I will go through them in details. [mks_dropcap style="square" size="55" bg_color="#ffffff" txt_color="#dd3333"]P[/mks_dropcap]an Hui received his Ph.D degree from Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and earned his MPhil and BEng both from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Hong Kong. He is currently a faculty member of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology where he directs the HKUST-DT System and Media Lab ( http://symlab.ust.hk ). He is an adjunct Professor of social computing and networking at Aalto University Finland and also served as a Distinguished Scientist for Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-labs) Germany until 2015. Before returning to Hong Kong in 2013, he has spent several years in T-labs and Intel Research Cambridge. He has published more than 150 research papers with over 9,000 citations and has around 30 granted / filed European patents. He has founded and chaired several IEEE/ACM conferences/workshops, and has been serving on the organising and technical program committee of numerous international conferences including ACM SIGCOMM, IEEE Infocom, ICNP, SECON, MASS, Globecom, WCNC, ITC, ICWSM and WWW. He is an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing and IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing.

“移动增强现实”（AR，或译扩增实境技术被广泛认为是接下来的十年当中最有前途的技术之一。通过移动增强现实，我们可以用无数种方式把来自我们感官和移动设备的信息融合起来，而这在以前是不可能的。这种通过人工环境补充现实世界而非替代现实世界的方式，尤其适用于旅游、航行、娱乐、广告和教育等应用领域。在这次演讲中，我会首先做一个在我们“系统与媒体实验室”（香港科技大学和德国电信合作组建）中进行的关于移动增强现实技术的研究概述。然后，我会用两个我们已经研发出的系统－Ubii和Hyperion作为例子，来说明研究中不得不面对的挑战。Ubii是数码和物理世界之间无缝互动的介面，Hyperion是可穿戴的增强现实系统，用来在空中进行文本提取和操作。我会通过它们进行详细介绍。許彬于剑桥大学计算机实验室获得博士学位，并在香港大学电气与电子工程学院获哲学硕士和工程学士学位。现就职于香港科技大学计算机科学及工程学系，并在此领导由香港科技大学和德国电信合作组建的“系统与媒体实验室”（ http://symlab.ust.hk）。其为芬兰阿尔托大学社交计算和网络的兼职教授，2015年之前一直为德国电信研究院的杰出科学家。2013年回到香港之前，曾于德国电信创新实验室和剑桥Intel研究院访问学习数年。至今已发表研究论文150余篇，被引用9000余次，其还被授予约30项欧洲专利。他曾发起主持数个IEEE（Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ，电气与电子工程师协会）和ACM（Association for Computing Machinery，国际计算机学会）的会议和工作坊；是多个国际会议的组织和技术程序委员会成员，包括ACM SIGCOMM（ACM ISpecial Interest Group on Data Communication，国际计算机协会数据通信专业组）, IEEE Infocom（ IEEE The Conference on Computer Communications，国际计算机通信会议）, ICNP（International Conference on Network Protocols，国际网络协议会议), SECON（IEEE Communication Society Conference on Sensor and Ad Hoc COmmunications and Networks）, MASS（IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad hoc and Sensor Systems，国际移动自组网和传感器系统会议）, Globecom（Global Telecommunications Conference，全球通讯会议）, WCNC（IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference，无线通信与网络会议）, ITC（International Test Conference，国际测试会议）, ICWSM（The International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media，博客和社交媒体国际会议）and WWW（International World Wide Web Conferences，国际万维网大会）；还担任IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing（期刊名，简称TMC）和IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing（期刊名，简称TCC）的副主编。
