Wtf are Blocks?

Rick Rubin, in his recent book, said that an artist often struggles with their internal ‘weighing’ mechanism. Some pieces are precious to a creator; others are priceless. And some… well they just needed to get out.

The market weighs pieces differently than the artist though. This is especially true for the creator that has not reached escape velocity. However, sometimes there are pieces that the artist and appreciators both perk ears for.

The 16th Blocks piece made in the span of three days.

It was after this I realized I may have stumbled upon an art project that pushes me beyond my comfort zone. First, we’ll experiment with burn to redeem from previous open editions I’ve done on Zora.

The initial 10 pieces total 200 editions. They are priced according to their rarity for those that don’t have other editions of mine.

If collected, the next eight pieces come into play. All of them being burn to redeem from previous blocks now.

The goals of part one are:

  • have fun with blocks onchain

  • experiment with burn to redeem collector rewards

  • see if my hunch about this project is correct

If so, then I see a future where we move onto composable block generations and an onchain playground.

Part Two

Here are some mock up images that give a better feeling than words.

This is a project that I feel more than I understand.

If you’ve read any of my work on memes than this starts to look like me possibly discovering my memetic icon. But again, this is all conjecture until the market has its say.

Blocks are reminiscent of childhood. In a way I feel the sense of fun returning to me onchain - things had gotten somewhat stale.

With immature DAU’s and a recent inquisitions into memes and onchain hypercultures, I find myself resetting a bit. Things like fun, play, collaboration; these things rise back up the priority list. I wonder if Blocks have a part to play in that or are just a tone setter.

For now my answer to wtf are blocks is:

an onchain playground
