Beyond Points: Designing Sustainable Crypto Incentives That Drive Engagement and Value

As builders in the crypto space, one of our biggest challenges is designing effective incentives and reward systems that align user behavior with long-term project sustainability. Relying solely on basic points models can backfire—just ask Brian Flynn, founder and CEO of Rabbit Hole.

In a recent discussion, Brian shared with Jess how Rabbit Hole moved away from a points-based system after realizing users cared more about their point totals than actual product features or value. As Brian put it, "Points don't equal tokens with real value."

When users become obsessed with accumulating points rather than engaging meaningfully, it's a sign of misaligned incentives. Projects need continuous token rewards tied to real value to properly measure ROI and incentivize behaviors that support sustainability.

Of course, as I argued, points still have an experimental purpose for projects figuring out incentives before launching tokens. The key is recognizing their limitations.

The conversation got me thinking: as builders, how do we design crypto incentives that drive engagement while avoiding common pitfalls? Beyond points, bots can game simple rewards systems, and wallet fragmentation across apps causes poor experiences.

Brian believes the future lies in transaction-based models that distribute ownership through protocol revenue sharing without relying on native tokens. While this aligns with sustainability, user acquisition remains difficult without points today.

The bottom line? We need to test and iterate on crypto incentive structures that go beyond points to...

· Distribute ownership and align users with sustainability

· Share protocol revenue to incentivize engagement

· Reward users based on delivering actual value and outcomes

It won't be easy. However, the projects that get incentives right will have a major advantage in driving engagement while building sustainable models that last. Exciting times ahead!

What do you think? What incentive structures have you found effective? I'm eager to hear your insights on this critical topic for crypto projects!
