It's time to wake up and smell the Cocoa!

Why are those brownies you love to chew under threat?

GM Depinners!

Climate change is having a knock on effect on our most loved goods, including dear old brownies that we know you love as much as we do here at Morpheus Network.

Perhaps you have a sweet tooth like our good handsome friend in the profile pic or like to tuck into an egg at Easter time then it is time to sit up and pay attention to the news coming out of West Africa as it is responsible for nearly 60% of global cocoa supplies.

If this is a shock to you then don’t worry we are in the same boat but there is more that we can do to better track supply, demand and future production opportunities. If you know any cocoa plantations that want to hook up please put them in touch with us.

For now, let's take a closer look at what's happening. The cocoa bean is the core ingredient of all the chocolate we love and it is battling three consecutive years of poor harvests. This has sent the price of beans through the roof, reaching over $11,000 per metric ton recently.

Cocoa trees are becoming more and more difficult to cultivate due to weather extremes. Climate change has led to reduced yield and excessive rain has brought diseases to the plants. As a result, global cocoa production is expected to drop by nearly 11 percent this season.

"As climate change increasingly impacts our beloved cocoa supply, it's imperative that we rethink our approach to sustainability and transparency in the cocoa supply chain. At Morpheus Network, we are committed to leveraging our technology to provide greater traceability from bean to bar, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation and that cocoa is sourced sustainably. By supporting brands that prioritize these values, we can collectively drive change and secure the future of our favorite treats." - Noam Eppel, COO of Morpheus Network

Climate Change is starting to hit our store shelves

In the past high prices for cocoa were an incentive for farmers to plant more trees. Today, even if those farmers want to produce more, the unpredictable weather is causing havoc and making the business unsustainable.

As cocoa trees take approximately 5 years to produce a good harvest and the younger generation of farmers in West Africa are showing little interest in a trade that is under threat. With the cocoa crisis one of our most loved foods faces potential collapse.

Let’s consider how we can provide transparency and traceability in the cocoa supply chain, ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation and that cocoa is sourced sustainably. By tracking each stage of production, from bean to bar, Morpheus Network can help mitigate some of the economic pressures on farmers and improve overall supply chain efficiency.

As brownie eating, Easter egg hunting, creme egg licking consumers, our choices will also play a role in the future of cocoa plantations. Supporting brands that prioritize sustainability and fair trade can drive broader changes in production.

The next time you sit down to enjoy a brownie, take a little time to consider where the beans come from and how we can work together to help these farmers have a sustainable future.

GN for now!
