Urban Communities

The Vital Role of the Social Sector in Building City Cohesion

"Urban Communities" Only the social sector can create what we need today – urban communities. In developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, there is a pressing need to establish urban communities. However, neither the public sector nor businesses can create the new communities that large cities so desperately need. This task falls to non-governmental, nonprofit, and non-commercial organizations. Only the social sector can create what we now need – urban communities, especially of highly educated knowledge workers who increasingly dominate developed societies. Only nonprofit organizations can provide the vast array of necessary communities – from religious congregations to professional associations, from organizations caring for the homeless to health clubs. Only nonprofit organizations can ensure the effectiveness of civic communities. In the 20th century, we witnessed the rapid growth of the public and private sectors of the economy, especially in developed countries. In the 21st century, equally rapid development of the nonprofit social sector will be required, creating communities within the new dominant social environment – the city. TIP OF THE DAY: Consider how the nonprofit organizations close to you can contribute to building urban communities.
