Ummmmm.... Let's just get into it.

Street photography

On the day of the below video, I set out to begin my journey to add street photography to my repertoire. The big takeaway was:

It's hard.

No joke, it is a lot more work than one would think.

Up until this point, I had only done "street" if it was just in the moment of something else I was doing, usually architecture. Oh, there goes an interesting person, snap snap, and back to the architecture. This was the first time I set out specifically for street.

Living just outside of one of the largest metros in the world, I was not for a lack of subjects. I did, however, consistently run into two... challenges. These were in addition to the 'normal' challenges one might relate to street photography:

candidness
possible confrontation
composition and timing
distractions
confidence
lighting conditions
perspective
et cetera

These were not my main concerns, though. Very much a product of the times we live in, I was struggling with masks and phones.

A majority of poeple are still masked up, and everyone has there mask buried in their phones, so it made it a bit difficult to get, let's just say characters. I was looking to tell a story through facial expressions, which I think a lot of good street (not all, but a lot) does. No visible faces, no story.

The masks will eventually fade, but unfortunately the screen situation will probably only get worse. To get the kind of shots I want, I guess I will just have to exercise that p-word that many of us struggle with; patience.

Maybe I should just lean into the madness of modern homosapiens to tell a story titled Captured Attention. Get it? It's a photography joke, ah whatever. 🤡

As for this particular day, I decided to play around with perspective and composition a bit more as a hot-fix of sorts.

Before I set off wandering the mask and phone-filled streets, I recorded an episode of The Pink Sink Diaries; a special, behind-the-scenes token-gated vlog content.

In this video, I give a little thanks, go into the plans of the vlog (very meta), and talk about street photography as mentioned above.

I wanted to get this video up closer to the date it was recorded but found myself having a little trouble with the token-gating functionality.

Luckily, the team at Paragraph.xyz, where this newsletter is hosted, are rockstars, and I was able to work with them to get this sorted! At least it appears sorted on my accounts holding a Pink Sink ES NFT.
