On the surface pics or it didn't happen (poidh) is a standard bounty app. You create a task with funding, someone claims task completion, and you release the funds if you believe their claim is sufficient.
But there's one key difference: when someone completes a bounty that you created, you also collect the NFT that they submitted as "proof" of their actions. This is hardwired into the contract and cannot be changed. The only way to pay out a poidh bounty is by "accepting" a claim, automatically transferring their NFT to your wallet and your bounty funds to their wallet. You can watch the whole process in action here.
Why did we design the protocol in this manner? It would have been sufficient to have bounty claimants simply share an address for payment without the added friction of uploading a photo and minting an NFT. Is all this added complexity necessary?
There are three reasons we made this design decision:
Spam protection: Having a small NFT minting fee somewhat decreases the odds that bounty creators will have to deal with claims that are not sufficient. It doesn't remove the possibility of fraudulent claims entirely, but it does increase the barrier to entry.
Bringing offchain truth onchain: "Pics or it didn't happen" is an accepted meme for establishing IRL truth online. A big problem for any decentralized bounty app is proving that something offchain happened in an onchain manner. Setting a standard for visual evidence is our way of using an existing and accepted meme to reinforce the reliability of our bounty system for getting things done IRL.
They are potentially valuable: Every time you collect a poidh NFT you now own a rare artifact representing the provenance of an event that took place. The vast majority of these artifacts, like the vast majority of digital assets, will likely be low-value in the long run. However, depending on the action they represent, the market could determine there is value.
The first two bullet points above are straightforward. The third, however, is something worthy of attention. In this blog, we want to highlight why this feature has potential as a breakthrough crypto use case. We'll also share exciting new features that lean into allowing you to appreciate and discover poidh NFTs.
invest in the real-world actions you incentivize
Think about your favorite IRL collectible. It could be an old video game, merchandise from a sporting event, or a cultural artifact from a different era. In all these cases, the value of the collectible is not based purely on the physical makeup of the item. It is instead rooted in the historical events that that item was connected to. Trillions of gold coins have been minted in human history, but rare coins provably linked with historical events are worth astronomically more than their counterparts.
With this in mind, the core innovation of the poidh bounty system isn't simply that we make it extremely easy to create, share, and claim bounties. We also enable users to take pride in the events they incentivize and encourage them to think about how the "proof-of-work" they collect may be viewed days, weeks, and years from today.
Collecting poidh NFTs is exciting because this use case is one where crypto offers a fundamental improvement over what is possible with traditional fiat money. With poidh, the entire process of creating a task and confirming its completion is onchain. This means that poidh bounty creators receive a collectible uniquely representative of the provenance of real-life actions.
Fiat lacks the programmability and decentralization needed for frictionlessly transferring the IRL provenance that a poidh NFT represents. A blockchain isn't used for the sake of using a blockchain. The core value prospect of poidh wouldn't be possible without decentralized blockchains.
Now we want to be clear: the poidh team does not guarantee that the NFTs you collect will have any present or future value. There are also no plans to use poidh NFTs as a mechanism regarding ownership rights of the protocol. If you are collecting them, their only inherent value is the potential for the free market to desire your digital assets at some point in the future.
How do you help that cause? Consider the different ways that you could use poidh to incentivize IRL actions that are relevant to a large number of people:
A bounty that spurs the creation of a new and helpful feature within a widely used piece of software
A bounty incentivizing a historic human accomplishment i.e. "break the current 100m dash record"
A bounty completed by a celebrity or other person of note
A bounty incentivizing a tangible improvement to a widely trafficked or famous geographical area
A bounty for a piece of artwork to be created for a popular community you are a member of
All of the above examples would produce a collectible relevant from the day they are minted while also having the potential to improve in value over time.
helping you collect poidh nfts
We've made a few exciting changes to the app to help you better collect, discover, and share poidh NFTs. You can now access a profile page displaying all your relevant poidh user stats, bounties, and NFTs. This page can be found by navigating to poidh.xyz/my-bounties/{your-address} or by utilizing the "My Bounties" link in the main menu while a wallet is connected to the app.
The NFTs on this page could be both those that you've collected from bounties or poidh NFTs that you've collected on the open market:
The NFT cards within profile pages have some added features as well:
Clicking the address for an "issuer" will take you to the poidh profile page for that address
Clicking the "bounty id" text will take you to the specific bounty page that the NFT completed
Clicking the "opensea link" text will take you to the OpenSea page for that poidh NFT
With these new features, we hope poidh users can more seamlessly discover other users, browse their collectibles, and make educated decisions regarding the historical bounties and provenance each NFT represents.
Special note for poidh early adopters: If you've completed one of our early bounties and we collected your NFT, there's a good chance we've airdropped it back to you. Check your profile page to see 👀
moving forward
Our design contest is just wrapping up, and we're excited to announce a winner shortly! With this completed, we'll be able to give the app a much-needed facelift. Our revamped design will also allow the profile pages and poidh NFT discovery to be significantly more user-friendly.
