Punk Community DAOclaration

Why would we need a Punk DAO when the CryptoPunk brand is owned by Yuga Labs and there’s a Punk Discord, Telegram, and PunksClub, spawning real-world and digital meet-ups across the globe and metaverse?

The Punk Community DAO hopes that our work can complement and coordinate the efforts of everyone who is already working with Punks.

Within Punk DAO, as ELI5’ed in our “Hello World” post, there are two main cohorts driving forward punk culture: Punk Venture DAO and Punk Community DAO. Venture focuses on supporting crypto builders (including CryptoPunk founders 😉), while Community aims to serve as a voice—and hands—for one of the best communities in Web3.

A DAO is much more than a buyers club or a venture capital firm. It’s more powerful than a talking shop or a consultative body. It is a dynamic form of building community with impact that is uniquely possible using smart contracts and decentralised governance, and it is a core superpower of Web3.

The Punk Community DAO can be a Schelling Point for organizing and marketing the collective IP of individual CryptoPunk holders. The Discord and events may let 10,000 good vibes, friendships, and partnerships bloom among our members. Punk Community DAO can also be a forum for making decisions, coordinating actions, and speaking as an independent voice for CryptoPunk hodlooors. We hope as many owners as possible participate.

Punk Community DAO… Wat Do?

Together, as the Punk Community DAO, we will: 

🤘 Strengthen CryptoPunk group identity and cohesion among holders, whether they are very online or more unplugged.

🤘 Promote the CryptoPunk ethos and lore in the Web3 space and wider mainstream culture by backing aligned projects and creating Punk inspired media.

🤘 Build or fund projects that bring benefit to Punk holders overall, such as tools and resources being developed to support safe lending and delegation of Punks or pooling of IP.

🤘 Organize and sponsor IRL Punk experiences and social events.

🤘 Encourage the online and remote community life of Punk holders, via Twitter, Discord, Telegram, Web3 social, and other forums that might arise as time goes on.

🤘 Foster engagement with the governance of Punk DAO, by drafting and circulating proposals, enabling participation in discussion and voting, and convening attendance DAO meetings.

And these are just a start – the infinite cyber-sky is the limit 🚀!

Our modern digital world, and Web3 especially, increasingly speed-run events one after another, and as Punk Community DAO, our goal is to make sure that when opportunity and need arise, every Punk holder has access and capacity to help determine how we will respond as a community. The decentralised nature of crypto means that it will always be impossible to make sure that every CryptoPunk holder has the chance to learn about or want to participate in our collective decision-making. But crypto is at its best when there’s reliable transparency, democracy, and collective action, which is what Punk DAO is made for.

We launched in the middle of a (fiat priced) bear market (even though CryptoPunks in ETH look smoother than some stablecoins 😎), and the CryptoPunks brand is still in the early days of a new owner and steward, Yuga Labs. We can’t predict when we’ll want this platform representing Punk holders as broadly as possible, so it’s now there when we need it. Best intention CryptoPunk feedback to Yuga, cultural and economic debates within Web3, JPEG SAFU concerns, national and international crypto policy, and even improvement proposals within the Ethereum network might all be topics where the Punk DAO Community might want to weigh in as a unified voice for Punk owners. Or more materially, we might want to come together for a charitable goal or offer resources to meet a market need that benefits each of us. The possibilities are endless like confirmations on the blockchain.

There are a number of ways to get involved. Punk DAO recognises that ETH is not the only medium of value, and that many of us have expertise, resources, and time to offer.

The nuts and bolts of these goals are still to be decided. The best way to get involved is to attend our regular Tuesday meetings, organized by Tribute Labs, and to join the Punk DAO Discord. If you’re a Punk owner, verify in the Discord (contact the mods if you’re not able to verify with your Punk wallet), and you can get access to our Community channels.

We also want to hear from people who don’t (yet!) own a Punk, but are Punk appreciatooors, or want to partner or contribute time and skillz to support Punk DAO—feel free to drop in our public Discord channel! Punks have helped to define NFT crypto as it is today, and the essence of what it means to be Punk belongs to all of us.
