On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Maya Bakhai, Founder and General Partner at Spice Capital, an early stage venture capital firm that is funding businesses solving problems for the next generation of internet-native consumers.

Maya founded Spice Capital in October 2021 with the goal of adding some spice to the predominantly white, male dominated field of venture capital. Recent stats show that less than 3% of all VC money goes to companies founded by women, and less than 15% of all investors are women. Maya taps into her previous experience at PwC and Thirty Five Ventures, the VC firm co-owned by NBA star Kevin Durant, as well as her personal experiences and perspectives as a young, female, person of color, to identify promising new opportunities and make investments into initiatives that traditional investors might miss.

Spice Capital is backed by big names like Marc Andreesen, Chris Dixon, and Alex Ohanian, but it also benefits from the perspectives of a diverse group of investors, which is made possible by the unique way in which Spice is structured. While most VC firms require a minimum buy in of $250,000, Maya has reduced that number to as little as $5 for investors from an underrepresented group.

In my conversation with Maya, we talk about why she chose crypto, community, and capital as the 3 main categories for investment for Spice, what she believes is the largest unsaturated market in web3 investment right now, how she sees the creator economy evolving in the future, and much more.
