We're off....

This is our first newsletter.... we'll cover our starting philosophy and approach

Thanks for being here...

From: Duane

After quite a few months of reflection and learning I feel like I have just scratched the surface on the challenges and opportunities we are going to have to face in future, and in healthcare.

One thing we all know, and I have found being reinforced in every corner of the exploration so far, is that no matter what you call it - reform, disruption, innovation, whatever - change is a given.... Good change though, is not.

I have also heard consistently that most people want some version of a happy, healthy and sustainable future, and that many have experienced that this is far more likely when we are clear about purpose… the "why" of things. Whether big picture 'life' or just simply the purpose of a meeting.

These last few months have also been full of personal analysis… so many data points, best put to use as input for concepts like Ikagai.

My outlook here is that having a background and experience at the intersect of leadership, strategy, innovation and technology should be pretty relevant to the future and can contribute to 'good' progress. Secondly, I wanted the next adventure to more fully involve my co-conspirator in life, Sarah.

Between us we've started a few businesses - some worked, some didn't. What has always worked though is us as a team - our decision making, communication and complimentary, yet different, ways of thinking. An advanced physio practitioner with exceptional clinical and process improvement skills and untold empathy and compassion, her insights on what is really going on for patients, families and clinicians adds so much value to what we can see and contribute to our clients together.

From Duane and Sarah:

So we're really excited to take the covers off our next adventure that we're calling....

The 4th as a name was the rather simplistic fusion of several inspirations…. Each that had some reference to 4 in them.

  • The 4th industrial revolution, and the rapid emergence of web3's principles and solutions that are defined by decentralisation, open, trustless and tool based technologies

  • Aristotle's 4th Cause: which proposes that 'we do not have knowledge of a thing until we have grasped its why, that is to say, its cause' - a purpose to exist and contribute to.

  • A 4th career: we've got a diverse experience in health and business - from clinical practice, consulting, leadership, data analytics and technology. We've been employees, employers and business owners across public, private and not for profit sectors. We feel like this is our 4th phase and are grateful to be able to start something brand new.

  • New ways of working and the changing demographics in our workforce. One simple, evidence based action that we feel strongly leads to productive, happier and sustainable lives is a working the equivalent of 4 days or 32 hours per week.

The 4th is a vehicle for us to contribute to the world and to organisations and their leaders who are trying to reimagine healthcare, with 2 initial areas of service:

  1. providing tailored, expert advice & venture support to organisations that results in change to health care. We believe that better strategic direction and leadership lifts people & purpose led performance, and builds resilient, sustainable and attractive organisations.

  2. Initiating and partnering on projects or ventures that reimagine health care. Strategy development, leadership coaching and mentoring, business maturity, angel investment and just good ol' fashioned GSD (getting sh!t done).

We will also be continuing to explore, research and reflect on ideas that we think are important to the future....Things like:

  • how finding and using purpose is central to progress and good change

  • how we need more purpose-led, human centred leadership, strategic direction and performance management

  • how our legacy systems of human industry and organisation are unlikely to fit our future and must be reimagined.

  • how technology tools that we develop and use must improve in alignment with sustainability of humanity and planet.

It's been exciting and humbling to have already kicked off a few things that are putting this into practice and you can read more on our brand new website. We know it's not perfect, but we know that progress beats perfection.

By subscribing to our newsletter you'll get direct access to a simple, easy to read bit of info every month (for now) that we think you'll find interesting, together with some reflections on the 'so what, what next' relevant to health. As we build out some web3 'chops' you will see far more benefits, features and content that helps us all reimagine health.

If you've made it this far - thanks! - and here's four things you can do next:
