Facts about Nepali
Official Language of Nepal: Nepali, also known as "Nepalese," is the official language of Nepal. It serves as the lingua franca and is spoken by the majority of the population in this diverse and culturally rich country.
Indo-European Language: Nepali belongs to the Indo-European language family, specifically the Indo-Aryan branch. It shares linguistic roots with other Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi and Bengali.
Devanagari Script: Nepali is written in the Devanagari script, an ancient writing system that originated in India. The script consists of 36 consonant characters and 12 vowel symbols.
Influence of Sanskrit: Nepali has borrowed many words from Sanskrit, an ancient Indo-Aryan language and one of the oldest languages in the world. This influence is evident in the vocabulary and religious terminology used in Nepali.
Nepali in Bhutan and India: While Nepali is the official language of Nepal, it is also recognised and spoken in other neighbouring countries. In Bhutan, particularly in the southern regions, Nepali is widely spoken by the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese community. Additionally, in the Indian state of Sikkim and some parts of the northeastern states, Nepali is also recognised as an official language due to the presence of Nepali-speaking populations.
