The week was a busy one for Web3 gaming ecosystem with many exciting updates and announcements. Giants like Amazon and Oreo made moves in the industry, indicating growing interest in the potential of web3 gaming technology.

Even on the gaming front, there was no shortage of exciting events and updates, even from major web3 games like Sandbox, Axie Infinity, Alien World, Splinterlands, and more!

That said, let’s get started with the weekly wrap-up.

Game Updates 

  • Axie Infinity Launches Lunar New Year Contest: The popular blockchain-based game Axie Infinity is celebrating Lunar New Year with a special contest for its community. Players will earn points by completing missions in the arena, such as winning ranked or practice arena battles, crafting rare and epic Ronin runes and charms, buying and releasing Axies, and winning bonus battles with specific types of Axies. These points will be used to redeem rewards such as Mystic Items, Avatars, Stickers, and a special Lunar New Year Border. The event was scheduled to run until February 1st, so players will have the chance to accumulate as many points as possible and claim prizes.

  • The World's Biggest DJ Demo Drop Party is Happening at The Sandbox: Decentralized NFT gaming world The Sandbox has teamed up with Warner Music Group (WMG) to host a virtual release party for Spinnin' Records' World's Biggest Demo Drop (WBDD). The party is from January 26th to February 8th. The Party will feature music from all winning DJs and a virtual appearance by each of them as an NPC that players can interact with. Visitors can take on multiple quests in The Sandbox to learn more about these talented artists. By completing 80% of them, you will earn one memorabilia and share a 50k SAND prize pool with other players. If you own a WMG pass, you can also earn from another 50k SAND reward pool.

  • Arc8 and Decentral Games are Back with Another ICE Token Takeover: After launching the first ICE tournament in Arc8, Decentral Games is back with another Token Takeover with prizes worth $6,000 in $ICE. This sponsored tournament will run from January 26th to 30th, allowing players to earn $ICE and special G-Bot wearable NFTs. Decentral Games is offering 1.5 million $ICE in prizes to the top participants of this event. The Arc8 app will host $ICE competitions across all games, including G-Bot-exclusive titles like Energy Wars and Dark Lords. Players can always enter these tournaments by buying in with their $GMEE tokens.

  • Splinterlands Introduces Battle Ruleset Update: Splinterlands Battle Ruleset has been upgraded from 2 rulesets to 3 rulesets. Players can now activate up to 3 rulesets simultaneously. This will be applied to the Gold League, Higher Ranked Battles, Tournaments and Guild Brawl Battles. Besides changing the number of combinations, the team will modify how players can choose members. Henceforth, rulesets will not be divided into the primary and secondary categories. Instead, users can choose mate as they want, except for specific exclusion or incompatible power-ups. This update will open opportunities for players to combine in-game boosters that were not there before.

  • Alien Worlds Launches NFT Season 8: The Alien Worlds Season 8 will feature a wide range of NFTs including Land Plots, Tools, Minions, Avatars and Weapons. Alien Worlds unveils NFT Season 8 featuring new utilizations like trading, reward accumulation among many others. The team made this announcement on its Twitter handle alongside a short video clip on YouTube.

Ecosystem Updates 

  • Twitch Co-Founder’s Solana Gaming Platform Fractal Expands to Polygon: Fractal, a leading Web3 gaming hub founded by Twitch co-founder Justin Kan, has joined the Polygon ecosystem. Through this partnership, the NFT marketplace will provide a suite of tools for game developers to integrate their projects with blockchain features.  Fractal will be offering its product suite F Studio, which includes a launchpad, marketplace, tournaments, developer SDK, game launcher, and Sign-in with Fractal service to the top 30 blockchain games on Polygon. These include Aether Games, Champions: Ascension, Phantom Galaxies, Life Beyond, Sunflower Land, League of Kingdoms, and much more.

  • OREO Cookies Enters the Metaverse: OREO has introduced a new, limited-edition cookie called the "Most OREO OREO," and to launch it, they have created an immersive digital world called the "OREOVERSE" where fans can play games and have virtual adventures. The virtual world of the OREOVERSE, hosted on Meta Horizon Worlds, allows fans to participate in cookie-themed games and contests to win prizes, including a grand prize of $50,000. Fans can create their virtual OREO cookie and participate in other activities in this virtual world.

  • Amazon Preparing to Launch Web3 Gaming and NFT Initiative: According to a Thursday report by Blockworks, Amazon is preparing an initiative focused on NFTs and Web3 gaming. The project will have Web3 gaming as its core and offer NFTs as rewards to players. Furthermore, the e-commerce giant has more than a dozen partners lined up for the project, including layer-1 blockchains, blockchain-based gaming startups and developers, and digital asset exchanges. Allegedly, the plan is still in its early stages and the company is expected to make an official announcement on the project in April.

  • Pegaxy Partners With Value Unlocked for New VIS Use Case: Pegaxy has announced that they have partnered with Value Unlocked to allow players of the play-to-earn horse racing game to redeem VIS tokens for real-life products via coupons, gift card and discount codes, thus bringing a new use case for the earnable token.

  • Mythical Games Acquires DMarket: Mythical Games, one of the OG blockchain gaming firms, has announced the acquisition of DMarket, a Web3 gaming marketplace, for an undisclosed amount. With this, the Blankos Block Party creator launched Mythical Marketplace 2.0, a new NFT trading platform built by Mythical and DMarket. The acquisition is a significant milestone for Mythical, as it taps into DMarket's expertise to facilitate the most advanced trading platform for virtual assets. It also makes Mythical the world's second-largest processor of digital assets on a distributed ledger after the Ethereum mainnet.
