Can you see me,
dad? I'm watching
your favourite game,
with your grandkids,
sharing a
sliver of that love with them.
My dad loved tennis. Not only did he play well into his seventies (maybe even into his eighties), but he watched basically every second of tennis aired on tv. Posters of players and newspaper pages about the game decorated his room. I liked playing tennis, maybe even still do, but never to the level of my dad. Still, the game was always present in my life growing up.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics we went to see an afternoon of tennis. At the legendary Roland Garros venue. Not just to get a taste of the Games, but also to share a bit of the love for tennis with our kids.
What did your parents love when you grew up?
The poem above is a 'highku', a form I created inspired by the Higher movement. It is a poem that has an inspirational and aspirational message, and consists of 6 lines of 4, 4, 4, 4, 3 and 7 syllables.

Next up: the paralympics. Getting to that Olympic level is a big goal, and sometimes you need to take small steps to achieve your big goals. Listen to the amazing Diede de Groot - maybe an even more legendary tennisplayer than the Williams sisters, Steffi Graf, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic combined - talk about goals.
Today's Weekly Poetry Shot connects generations through sports. And looks at how to achieve goals. Read all about it now: https://paragraph.xyz/@trpplffct/wps207
I’m a bit obsessed with this part of sports—the meaning, the generational love and identity. Appreciate your poem and the story about it just as much. I appreciate tennis b/c my family has a tie to golf and they are basically twin sports.
Thanks Brad. I love hearing how people connect to my poetry. I remember my dad once did a golf clinic and they told him that as a tennis player, he would not find it difficult. That always stuck with me, even though I play neither myself. But the love for watching tennis is still there.
🤝 may I ask what is the significance of the highku 6 lines and representative syllable numbers? do all those numbers have meaning and connection to higher?
