LIP 10 - Open Communities Standard
This LIP aims to establish a standardized system for creating and managing these communities within the Lens ecosystem, ensuring seamless interaction and discovery across different Lens-based applications.
The debate heats up first with terminology. "Channels" for casual hangouts? Or "groups" for potentially moderated spaces? The Lens community is hashing it out.
But how do we categorize these communities once we have a name? Two approaches are on the table:
Tag Team: Utilize existing tags with a standardized prefix to categorize posts for specific communities (think "#lens-photography").
Field of Dreams: Introduce a new dedicated field in the Publication metadata (e.g., "community: string") to explicitly define community affiliation.
The discussion doesn't stop there! Should we be limited to sharing in a single community, or can we cross-post our wisdom across multiple channels? This question remains a hot topic.
Interestingly, some argue that Lens Profiles, with existing features like follow modules and custom references, can already function like groups themselves. Food for thought!
The Bigger Picture:
As LIP 10 unfolds, several key considerations are paramount:
Flexibility vs. Standardization: How can we achieve both user-friendliness and a developer-friendly standard for these communities?
Discovery Dynamics: How do we balance user intent for distribution with the power of algorithms in helping users find the right communities?
Privacy First: If private groups enter the picture, how do we ensure user control over content privacy?
Now the question...What are we waiting for here to make this a standard across all Lens clients?
Let's do this, guys!
