Certain comparisons are sacrilegious, to some. So I won’t make a direct comparison to one of the highest-selling digital artists who also works in primarily black and white, minimalism. But, the similarities are there. The deeper meaning behind simple aesthetics. The precise and clean renders. The minimalist design. The only difference may be that Shamlu expands and goes a little beyond. It adds more meaning and exploration to his work.
Shamlu studied ceramics, sculpting and art history for his masters. It’s easy to see the sculpting design and ceramics influence in his works. His compositions look as if chiseled from marble and with so much detail some even show the chisel markings as in Origins.
When human forms are portrayed his pieces they are often floating in a band of smoke, or ether, drifting, lost. Even when they are stationary these humans seem to have only temporary cover from the uncertainty as the forms begin to dissipate into a cloud, as in I Can’t Stop this Dream.
“I prefer to use subjects who are mentally lost,” says Shamlu, “Most of my works are a mixture of the thoughts I live within. I use black and white because I see darkness and light as an inseparable whole.”

Whether bringing light to darkness or darkness to light understanding that one cannot exist without the other unlocks the meaning to Shamlu’s work. Each exists as a blank canvas ready to reveal an inner thought, however cloudy or murky it may be, of the creator’s mind.
