Living in the same world as Itchy and Scratchy and Raving Rabbids is the violent, demented, hilarious artwork of Zaaa Bey (aka Kaan Bilaloglu). Much of his work revolves around a knock-off Mickey Mouse using his wild imagination to kill sheep, some of which are dear friends. Zaaa’s political commentary skills in 🖍️ Ooops , a small typo :) - D1sn3yWar and coy humor in Drinking Tea at Midnight bring depth to clever animations that a traditional art world may previously have ignored only to find the proper audience in the world of crypto art.

Ugiio illustrates a polar bear just trying to make it through his work shift ignoring all distractions, mostly giant earthquakes shaking his entire restaurant. Each scene is paired with a poem written by the artist capturing the overall essence of each work. Typically the poems focus on inner stillness and the quiet moments and creeping thoughts we all have when alone, adding a level of maturity to these beautiful animations. The most poignant of the poems appears in Memory Feast, “Sweetness, madness./ We look back in rose pink glass./ Reflects,/ we’re all greatness in progress./ A beautiful mess.”

The future looks bleak in the artwork of Doomsday Fellas. Often forgotten in the hype revolving around technological revolutions, such as the one we are experiencing currently with crypto, are the negative side effects of what these revolutions bring. We’ve seen the warnings from cyberpunk movies and pulp comics for decades with the lesson in each encouraging us to stop, listen and think before moving forward. Perhaps the creator behind Doomsday Fellas remains hopeful, but the images and story created through these hand-drawn gifs leave one feeling disheartened, to say the least.

Narrative art, like Haykal Erlanda, could bring about changes in film and publishing industries alike. Comics made the transition to film due to the built-in storyboard and fanbase. The same could happen in Haykal’s art which illustrates an entire story, A Song of Hex and Jynx, about three sister witches facing challenges that almost destroy them like heartache, warlocks and one becoming far too powerful for any of them to control. Her style fits perfectly with the story content like an ancient text with hand-painted illustrations aiding the reader’s imagination and providing a beautiful context to the story at hand. It’s not hard to envision Haykal turning this into a successful series of novels or stories and publishing it as NFTs.

Can frustration be nostalgic? Nothing captures the infuriating moments children of the 90s experienced sitting in front of their tube televisions screaming at silly pixelized stories quite like Glitch arcade. This glitch pixel art distorting, yet crystallizing, core memories from the Nintendo generation perfectly encapsulates this serendipitous moment of the current art renaissance and a generation raised by 8-bit storylines finding a way to cement their legacy and impact on a world still under the manipulative thumb of a boomer generation that prayed for a device such as this to help distract their children for a few moments of sanity, while cursing and blaming that generation for our current state affairs. Glitch Town Arcade captures the early mornings of Millenials (and Gen-Xers) spent screaming at a sibling that the cartridge was not aligned properly, or the strain we felt depleting our lungs into a cartridge to clean it out only to create these corrupted images and fractionalized scenes that we settled for because it was good enough…? This may be the perfect metaphor for a collective generational apathy (or even anger) that many of us feel in our daily lives, “I guess that'll do…?”

Each UNDRGRND DIGS will feature artists our curators have purchased for the UNDRGRND Collection. UNDRGRND will airdrop pieces from our collection to community members via giveaways.
