Last week, we announced the launch of XMTP groups, leveraging MLS to bring the most secure, privacy preserving, soon-to-be decentralized group chat to devs.
As Shane said in his posts on Warpcast and X;
”This is the most important moment for XMTP since the day we started. Our mission is to build the most open & secure messaging network that lasts forever.”
We’ve also made significant improvements to our security model, upgrading to MLS (Messaging Layer Security), the IETF standard for encryption, and have added several new security features including:
Forward secrecy
Post-compromise security
Key revocation (at per-installation level)
Anonymity (social graph)
The engineering effort behind this was massive. Check out this technical overview written by our engineering lead Naomi Plasterer. If you are looking to build with group chat, check out the docs.
This is a big milestone for the XMTP protocol and a massive step towards our mission of building the most open and secure messaging protocol in the world.
