Gradients
When I was starting out in design, gradients daunted me.
I didn't know how to use them, and the few times I tried I was horrified with the results; the beauty and simplicity of a sunset is matched only by how hard it is to recreate it. But gradients are just sequences of colour, and colours don't exist — only light exists.
So I got thinking about prisms, holograms, iMac G3s, the clear craze and a lot of other stuff that's somewhere on the spectrum, sometimes neither here nor (ghosts are spectral?) but all pretty cool.
