Professional Spotlight: Nkechi Enebeli - Building Communities and Creating Impact Onchain

In this week’s Professional Spotlight on Joba Network, we introduce Nkechi Enebeli, a passionate advocate for building in public and an influential figure in Africa’s Web3 ecosystem. From her early career in administrative roles to becoming a force for change in blockchain and decentralized technology, Nkechi’s story is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the power of community.

From Accounting to Advocacy

Nkechi’s journey started at the University of Benin, where she studied accounting. Her early career in the administrative sector saw her working as Chief Operations Officer at Crevatal Technologies, an Aesthetic Clinic and later managing the clinic. While she excelled in these roles, Nkechi felt the toxic work environment in the traditional workspace hindered her growth. This realization led her to seek new opportunities.

In 2022, at a low point in her career, Nkechi’s sister, introduced her to Web3. Skeptical at first, she overcame her apprehension, joined Web3Ladies as a Program Manager, and began her blockchain journey. This pivotal moment marked the start of an exciting career in creating meaningful initiatives within the Web3 space.

A Builder in Public

Nkechi’s mantra “build in public" defines her approach to professional growth. She emphasizes sharing one’s work, no matter how small, to showcase impact and attract opportunities. Through her active presence on social media and contributions to communities, she built a strong professional identity, gaining roles, recognition, and connections in the Web3 world without relying on traditional job applications.

Her dedication to building in public is not just a personal strategy but a message she consistently shares with others entering the Web3 space. She encourages professionals to embrace visibility, share their progress, and engage with the broader community to amplify their career growth.

Building Communities Across Africa

As a natural leader, Nkechi recognized the importance of fostering collaboration and education in the blockchain ecosystem. She co-founded Base Africa, a regional initiative under Base, to host in-real-life (IRL) meetups, workshops, hackathons, and community events across Africa. With established chapters in Nigeria, South Africa, and soon Ghana, Base Africa's mission is to onboard more Africans onchain through Base, one African country at a time.

Under Nkechi’s leadership, Base Africa has organized over four major events, including the recently ended Based Africa Hack Days for the Based Africa Buildathon, which saw significant participation from builders in the region. The group has also inspired others to create local communities, and initiatives geared towards bringing more people onchain.

Educating and Advocating

Nkechi is also an advocate for demystifying Web3. In Africa, misconceptions about blockchain often stem from fears of scams or an overemphasis on the technical aspects of crypto. Nkechi tackles these challenges head-on by hosting events, Twitter Spaces, and educational programs that make blockchain more accessible and inclusive. Her efforts have encouraged more individuals to explore non-technical roles and embrace the diverse opportunities within Web3.

Advice for Web3 Newcomers

For anyone venturing into the Web3 space, Nkechi offers practical advice:

1. Know What You Want: Be clear about your goals and identify skills that align with your aspirations.

2. Learn and Contribute: Acquire the necessary skills and actively participate in communities to grow and make an impact.

3. Attend Events: Tech events are invaluable for networking, learning, and showcasing your potential.

4. Build in Public: Share your work and experiences openly to build credibility and attract opportunities.

Looking Ahead

Nkechi's vision for the future at Based Africa includes launching initiatives such as the Based Africa School, aimed at providing physical spaces for education and collaboration to bring more people onchain. She's also planning the upcoming Base Pop Up City initiative, a groundbreaking event celebrating the intersection of technology, music, and culture. This year’s event will take place in Lagos, Nigeria on December 22.

In just two years, Nkechi has transformed her skepticism about Web3 into a thriving career that inspires others. Her journey underscores the importance of community, education, and the courage to explore uncharted territories.
