The other day, I wrote a blog about my belief behind all of products I built:
People should be able to work form anywhere in the world.
Working from wherever isn’t a luxury. It should be normal.
From today, I'm gonna keep writing down whats in my head and my learnings to get closer to the truth.
First of all, there are 2 ways to approach this problem.
Approach 1: Build a solution for existing in-person jobs
its simple and Deel is a great example of this approach. They help US companies hire talents from other countries and make the hiring/legal/payroll part easy and smooth.
Approach 2: Create a new form of workThis is like, Youtuber, Uber Driver, Airbnb host, Podcaster, Livestreamer etc. They are new form of profession that were born from new products / cultural shifts.
I'm particularly interested in 2, and all of my prv products were in this domain, probally because 1- I believe that creating new form of work is more impactful than new remote work tooling (Deel is still a great product thou), 2- I've never worked at the company so its hard to imagine building it myself.
Okay, then I'm still open minded but more chance to focus on 2 - Creating a new form of work / profession.
What are the new form of work that's never existed before and too minor and will be mainstream in the next 10 years?
The example of new professions above can clearly grouped into 2 category of cultural shifts.
Group 1: Born and raise of social media (writing era). people spend insane amount of their time on them.
→ Youtuber, Instagramar, Tiktoker, Podcaster, Livestreamer, Substack writer, Udemy Corse Creator,
Group 2: Born and raise of peer-to-peer marketplace (aka sharing economy)
→ Airbnb, Uber, Instacart, Doordash, Fiverr, Upwork, Etsy, Rover, Turo, Peerby,
I'm sure there are bunch of other new professions that were born in the past 10 or even 5 years.
but what about crypto and blockchains?
Auditor
Liquidity Provider
Trader
NFT creator
All the new and unproven domains that I tackled (P2E games, DAO, onchain game plugin builders) feels not sustainable or too niche but the list above could be the new professions that actually have pretty large number of active people sustainably earning money.
What can I learn from these?
new type of professions tend to be individual work
new tool → empower people to provide value (service) in a new way
especially group 2 is controversial but mass adopted with new cultural shifts
