What is a Tezos Domain Name?

A Tezos domain name is a human-readable identifier for a Tezos address on the Tezos blockchain. It is similar to a domain name for a website on the internet, but instead of pointing to a website, it points to a Tezos address where digital assets or smart contracts are stored.

Tezos domain names are represented as a string of alphanumeric characters and can be registered on the Tezos blockchain using the Tezos Naming Service (TNS).

Tezos domain names are useful because they provide a more user-friendly way to send and receive Tezos-based digital assets, as users can simply use the domain name instead of the long and complex Tezos address.

As an NFT artist or collector you will want a Tezos domain name for branding, accessibility, security, and monetization.

Tezos domain names are great for personal branding. If you are able to use the same username across Tezos, ETH, Twitter, Instagram, Discord, and web3 social platforms, people will be able to quickly and easily recognize you and your work. A consistent name will help fans and potential collectors to identify your art quickly and easily.

Having a Tezos domain name makes your profile more accessible to others.  People who want to view your work on Objkt.com will be able to search for your tez domain name (eg: lampphotography.tez) instead of having to look up your complicated wallet address (eg: tz1giR9Fd32o9VYHQB9oj9QWHDCoBxV1Q16i). The tez domain name is much more user friendly.

For your own security it is also a good idea to secure your Tezos domain name early in your NFT career. If you do not secure the name that you are using for marketing, and you start to gain traction as an NFT artist, someone else can register your Twitter username as a Tezos domain name and try to impersonate you or your work.

Your Tezos domain name can also be used to monetize your art. Every piece of art that you mint as an NFT will have your Tezos domain name in its metadata. Fans and collectors will be able to confirm that an NFT minted by you is authentic.

If you do not have a Tezos domain name, your profile on Tezos blockchain websites will appear as a long string of numbers and letters to identify your wallet, but will not be personalized or branded in anyway.

How To Secure Your Tezos Domain Name

Step 1: Visit tezos.domains

Open the browser associated with your Tezos cryptocurrency wallet, and head to tezos.domains/en

Take extra care to ensure that your browser bar reads tezos.domains and NOTHING else.

A common cryptocurrency scam is building dummy websites that look identical to the real deal as an attempt to phish for your seed phrases and passwords.

Always be suspicious, take it slow, and double check your web addresses.

Step 2: Check to See if Your Desired Tezos Domain Name is Available

Type your desired Tezos domain name into the search box and click search to see if its available.

I have built my brand on the username "LAMPphotography". I am planning to use this second account to mint less serious work, so to stay consistent with my branding, I am going to register the domain name, "LAMPmemes".

Step 3: Register Your Name

If your desired domain name is available, it will appear on the next page with a button that says "Register" next to a price to register the name in Tezos.

If you are happy with your chosen domain name, click "Register".

Step 4: Connect Your Wallet

You should be using the browser that has your Tezos wallet plug-in installed.

If you are, click connect wallet to allow your Tezos wallet to complete the transaction.

Step 5: Choose Your Preferred Wallet

Chose your wallet provider.

Make sure that you are using the wallet that you want associated with your personal brand as a Tezos artist or collector.

For this tutorial, I will be using a Temple wallet

Step 6: Unlock Your Browser Wallet

Your browser wallet should pop-up.

Enter your alphanumeric password to unlock your wallet.

Step 7: Connect Your Wallet

Click "Connect" to confirm the connection between Tezos Domains and your Tezos wallet.

Step 8: Request Your Domain Name

Click "Request" to make formal intent to purchase the Tezos domain name.

Be patient. It may take a few minutes for the process to complete itself.

Step 9: Confirm the Request

Your wallet should open as a pop up window that says "Confirm Operations".

From there, press "Confirm" to submit your intent to register the username.

Step 10: Wait

Sit tight and wait while the operation is sent to the Tezos blockchain.

This may take a few moments.

Step 11: View Your Operation Success Message

When you get a green "Success" message, you are ready to move on to the registration step.

Step 12: Choose Your Registration Period

Choose how long you want to register your domain name for. The price will increase with each year of registration.

Make sure to select "My Address" under "Domain points to" to get your domain name to show up in place of your Tezos wallet address on Tezos platforms.

Step 13: Confirm the Transaction

Your Tezos wallet plug-in should open. If you are still logged in, you will be able to click "Confirm" to agree to the Tezos fee to mint your domain name for your chosen time duration.

Step 14: Enter an Email Address

Enter an email address that you plan to have access to for years to come.

When your domain name is about to expire in a few years, you will be notified via this email address to renew it.

Step 15: Manage Your Domain

Congratulations! You are now the official owner of your Tezos domain name.

Click "Manage Your Domain Now" to finalize the process.

Step 16: View Your Tezos Domain Details

Check to ensure that your new domain name is pointing to the desired Tezos wallet.

If you made a mistake and registered it to the wrong wallet, you can click "Transfer Ownership" and send the domain name to another wallet.

Step 17: Check Your Work on objkt.com

Head back to objkt.com to see your new Tezos domain name in action.

Now when you go to view your profile, you should see your freshly registered domain name listed instead of your longer Tezos wallet address.

Step 18: Celebrate!

You now have your own Tezos domain name to help personalize your identity on the Tezos ecosystem.

Take a moment to celebrate your accomplishment.

In a future article, I will cover how to finish personalizing your Tezos profile.

A series of fireworks are layered over each other as the fireworks display ends.
