PepeFest 2024: The Ultimate Intersection of Art, Internet Culture, and Digital Revolution

Pepe the Frog: From Comic Icon to Cultural Icon

Digital fine artist Maxximillian Pepavaggio offers a unique opportunity to her first collector of this one of a kind artwork, inviting an opportunity for the Collector to suggest a message for this back wall in the painting that's meaningful to them. Curious about how she'll do this? Discover how, here.

What The Frog?!

Pepe the Frog: From Comic Icon to Internet Legend

Pepe the Frog, originally a character from Matt Furie's comic series "Boys Club," has transcended his humble beginnings to become one of the most recognizable and enduring internet memes of the 21st century. What started as a laid-back, somewhat melancholic amphibian quickly captured the hearts of online communities worldwide. His expressive face, capable of conveying a range of emotions from blissful joy to existential despair, has made him a versatile symbol across various digital landscapes.

For context, in the mid-2000s, artist Matt Furie created a comic series called "Boys Club," which featured a group of laid-back, anthropomorphic characters living a carefree, somewhat absurd life. One of these characters was Pepe the Frog, who quickly became the standout figure.

The iconic catchphrase, "Feels good, man" comes from a particular comic panel where Pepe is shown using the bathroom with his pants pulled all the way down. After finishing, he’s asked by a friend why he does that. Pepe simply replies, “Feels good, man.” The humor here is understated and absurd—it’s the kind of laid-back, “whatever works” attitude that encapsulates the comic’s overall vibe. It’s a small, personal moment that’s both funny and strangely relatable because it touches on those quirky habits people have that don’t always make sense to others but feel right to them.

This simple, relatable moment is what made “Feels good, man” resonate with so many people online. It captured a sense of easygoing contentment that was both humorous and endearing. Over time, this single panel was shared widely on the internet, evolving into a meme that was removed from its original context and took on a life of its own.

But Pepe’s journey didn't stop at internet fame. Over time, he has been co-opted by different subcultures and even thrust into social and political arenas, often without the consent of his creator. Despite these shifts, Pepe remains a cultural icon, embodying the chaotic, often unpredictable nature of internet culture. This very essence of Pepe—his ability to evolve and adapt—led to the birth of an event that would celebrate his impact on digital art and culture: PepeFest, an event that brings together artists, fans, and collectors alike to honor this notorious amphibian's influence on digital art, social media, and the message behind it.

American graphic designer and internationally acclaimed artist Beeple, known for his sharp, satirical takes on digital culture, too, embraces the allure of Pepe the Frog—a symbol that’s as infamous as it is beloved.

In one of his more striking pieces, Beeple reimagines Pepe as a towering, almost mythic figure, surrounded by a whirlwind of memes, currencies, and digital detritus. The frog stands tall amidst the debris of internet culture, almost as if he’s the last relic of a bygone era, watching over a world that’s been shaped—and in some ways, misshaped—by the very memes that gave him life. The detail is stunning: each wrinkle on Pepe’s face tells a story, each digital artifact around him a nod to the strange journey he’s been on.

"So much talent in the room per square centimeter, everybody vibing saying things like 'I'm never leaving'."

Here Artist Vampyre Ink and Art Director Tien Tetsujin look on as Beeple paints on and signs an airdropped Everyday print as a personal gift—one of hundreds of physical prints that were airdropped literally from the ceiling during the event.

Beeple’s art, especially when it involves Pepe, isn’t just about the frog; it’s a commentary like a mirror reflecting both the light and dark sides of the internet. By placing Pepe in these elaborate, often dystopian settings, Beeple invites viewers to enjoy the strange, almost surreal evolution of this character—from a comic strip to a meme, to a cultural phenomenon, and now, to high tech fine art.

It’s playful, yet it has that signature Beeple edge, suggesting that while Pepe might be a favorite of this digital empire, it’s an empire commenting on life and culture as a whole.

When artists work with Pepe it is engaging because it’s more than just art—it’s a narrative that captures the essence of digital culture. It’s as if we each take Pepe by the hand (or the flipper) and led him through the gaudy, glittering corridors of the internet, only to emerge as something more profound, more reflective, and infinitely more fascinating.

This combination of performance, production, and showmanship—a coexistence profounded by masterfully executed high aesthetic multi-faceted tropes addressing the core anxiety and humor surfacing within internet rabble—is an irresistible experience to behold and the artifacts are phenomenal.

The Culture of Limited Edition Pepe Collectibles

When Pepe artists meet in person, there’s a special tradition we love to uphold: exchanging limited edition collectibles. These artifacts are a big artist flex and tokens of appreciation; they are symbols of the creativity and camaraderie that define the Pepe art community. Each piece is unique to the style of the artist in form and format—crafted, often in extremely limited runs, making them highly sought after among peers.

Artist Kenneth Burris gets some quality time to feed Pepe's robot doggo a specially handcrafted robot dog bone, whimsically crafted from shiny mini wrench and bolts. It was a hit with the robot dog, and a treat for bystanders to see the robot dog do tricks and then gently take the treat from Kenneth's hand. Tap into the photo to see the video on IG.

All of the Hitomi Matsui Pepe collectibles were not the same—some have gold sparkles—sparking interest, curiosity and even envy for an artist like myself who missed meeting Hitomi on day one; I became more and more curious as more and more artists wearing tiny felt Pepe necklaces introduced themselves. In my opinion this was a huge flex for Hitomi as it generated for me intense curiosity about Who is this fabulous Hitomi Matsui?! Seeing the art before seeing the artist created a beautiful mystery that I was eventually pleased and satisfied finally to uncover as the artist herself was revealed, and we finally did meet in person. Kudos to Hitomi Matsui bringing so much fun, flavor and style to Beeple's PepeFest. Connect with her work, here.

Our practice of gifting and trading commemorative collectibles in person strengthens bonds within the community, as artists treat each other to these exclusive items, celebrating their shared passion for Pepe and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of digital art.

The value of these collectibles goes beyond their rarity—they represent a connection, a moment of collaboration, and a mutual respect among artists who understand the significance of contributing to a culture that prizes innovation and individuality.

More than souvenirs; they’re thoughtful gifts that symbolize our shared experiences and creativity. Giving and receiving these unique pieces is a way to say, “I appreciate your work, and I value our connection.” It’s a tradition that deepens our relationships and celebrates the art we create together. Each collectible is a reminder of the time we’ve spent, the conversations we’ve had, and the inspiration we’ve shared. It’s a small, but powerful way to keep the spirit of our community alive.

Other standout moments at Beeple's PepeFest 2024 was being able to witness renowned fine artist Pepelangelo creating live artwork in Beeple's fine art gallery—one of the first exciting surprises seen when we enter the gallery. As Pepelangelo brought Pepe to life right before our eyes, attendees were not only captivated by her skill but also inspired by her good energy that filled the space as we watched a master at work (and on her birthday week too!) Interested art collectors who would like a framed painting from Pepelangelo are encouraged to snatch them up. Look at these 5 iconic unique portraits, here.

But there was even more—yes, Beeple spoiled us as we richly deserved. We are also treated to a hot DJ set from Rare Scrilla where he performed his original meme music, keeping us hype and inspired.

Shout out and big thanks to Rare Scrilla for the music and dank vibes at PepeFest and beyond. In addition to his music contributions to the culture, his Rare Pepe (art on Bitcoin) game is notably dank, check it, here. Do not miss connecting with this legendary artist and beloved member of the community.

Artists vibed and mingled and all attendees offered an opportunity to create in public by participating in a live drawing competition—where everyone was then invited to launch a bitcoin dispenser to dispense the art we'd drawn—empowering each artist who wanted one with an iconic instant Bitcoin art dispenser, each, of our very own.

One of the most notable aspects of PepeFest 2024 is the opportunity for attendees to create, and acquire Pepe artwork from each other through a Bitcoin dispenser.

In the bleeding edge art scene, collecting artwork via a Bitcoin dispenser offers a modern, more efficient, alternative to the traditional buying experience, primarily characterized by lengthy online checkout processes, and often inconvenient KYC (know your customer practices that require us to fill out more information than really is needed to download a digital product or pay for a service).

Desultor's THEBOOKOFKEK (above) can be collected via Bitcoin dispenser.
Peep the business end of the Bitcoin dispenser for THEBOOKOFKEK by Desultor; it's immutably programmed to be delivered to the same wallet from which you sent your payment, so it's essential to use a self-custodial wallet that supports Bitcoin NFTs when acquiring art on Bitcoin from a dispenser.

For the dankest artists—those with their Bitcoin art dispensers set up and in action, acquiring their digital art is as simple as scanning a QR code. The experience is instant and largely frictionless: you scan a code, payment with cryptocurrency is confirmed in moments, and within minutes, you’ve secured newly identified art are your own - delivered, pristine and authentic with clear provenance irrefutably through technology. This simplicity injects a refreshing charge into the existing paradigm, aligning effectively with the realm of fast-paced, tech-oriented digital interactions. This public interaction offers the freedom of immediate ownership—like taking the artwork home right after apprehensive checking out, playing directly into our impulse-driven consumer culture.

This method not only enhances security and speed but also aligns with the digital art revolution, where transactions are fluid, direct, and entirely in the hands of the buyers. This culturally significant tool represents a shift in how art is acquired, blending the immediacy of digital currency with the convenience and privacy of personal mobile devices, making the process as engaging and instantaneous as the festival itself. As cryptocurrency continues to gain traction, Bitcoin dispensers are poised to become a staple at digital art events globally, reflecting the future of art collection.

This novel approach to art acquisition perfectly aligned with the digital theme of the event, offering collectors a dank, secure, and efficient way to own a piece of this cultural phenomenon. The Bitcoin dispenser added an heightened element to the festival, inviting participants to make available their freshly hand drawn works to the world—minting on location, engaging with art in a physical to digital way that synthesizes physical art, and the fast-paced self-service nature of both the decentralized finance and the digital art worlds.
