Have you ever intentionally set out to do something once, every day, forever?
Kind of a crazy concept. Something that goes on eternally forever, long after you leave the planet, dependent upon others to carry on the legacy. But even just doing something every day for one year is pretty impressive.
Today The Noun Square celebrates 365 days of joining together on Twitter Spaces to celebrate the end of the NounsDAO daily auction and pick the next noun. And like every idea in this space, it started with a tweet.
I’ve had the pleasure of joining this crazy crew on well over 200 of these 365 days – maybe even over 300 – and it’s a testament in community and grit. There’s a fairly small team in the background doing the hard work of keeping things going. Some have come and gone; some have been here from the start. All are passionate about this crazy experiment. ⌐◨-◨
It does bring to mind ideas around consistency, discipline and habit building. There’s very few things I do every day as a habit beyond brushing my teeth. I generally go through phases but this level of consistency really needs to provide some benefit. Why do something every day, forever?
The amazing @MissMayaD talks about her daily practice of gm in her pinned tweet. “For a year, every morning, I’ve gotten on this platform and said GM. Sometimes it was a GM in the PM but it was a consistent practice - probably the only one I’ve been able to sustain for 365 days with no misses. Ever.”
She goes on to talk about the impact of the daily gm. “GM has changed my life. It is not a time of day but a state of mind." And with a daily habit, each day brings a do-over. “Whatever happens, I am sure that it will continue to serve as a daily call and response to regulars and new friends alike. I’m sure it will continue to remind me that every day is a clean slate. A new chance for a GM regardless of what went down yesterday.”
In the case of The Noun Square, it’s an exercise in community building as part of a much larger crypto experiment. But who knew if anyone would show up to these spaces. Would people even want to gather to watch an auction for a digital asset every day? Would they have any interest in picking the next noun and listening in as we comment on Noun traits like we’re flipping through Tinder?
But yes, show up they did. And yes, participate they did. Every day. For 365 of them.
And in the course of those 365 days, laughs were had and friendships were born. And babies were even born! And on this island of misfit toys, people found their purpose and ways to contribute with their unique talents. The audience has ebbed and flowed, a similar ride with all things in this space. But a core team started and end this 365 days together. And tomorrow, after this celebration is long over, we will do it again.
One Noun O’ Clock.
Every Day.
Forever.
