My PizzaDAO Bitcoin Pizza Day commemorative shirt arrived today. And I’m guessing that most of the words in that sentence require explanation.
I love PizzaDAO and not just because of the free pizza (but it helps) but because of the experiment in collective action. Founded in 2021, the goal was to celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day to commemorate the first Bitcoin transaction by Laszlo Hanyecz who purchased two pizzas for 10,000 bitcoin.
But beyond that, it was to help independent pizzeria owners and demonstrate how you could bring people together on the internet with a common goal and have a real impact in the so-called real world. All by crowdfunding the DAO via the sale of pizza nfts and then giving away free pizza.
Free pizza – how can you not get behind this mission?
There’s a lot of fun and puns involved. When you join the discord you do have to share your favorite pizza AND your favorite mob movie to join the pizza mafia. (cheese and The Godfather for me. What would yours be?) The website notes “Made with cheese, sauce, and DAO.” It might be cheesy but it’s fun. (see what I did there?) I’m convinced that wrapping everything in fun is always the best approach.
With nounish DAOs, I’ve often said there are 3 aspects to success:
strong mission
minimum viable community (MVC)
great art!
If you have two of the three, you’ll usually find some success. All three and it sets you up best at the start. And although they are not a DAO fork of Nouns, they do have nounish qualities AND PizzaDAO founder Snax is a holder of Noun 292 – aka the Pizza WE Noun. They even got a prop passed in NounsDAO to help make the parties nounish. And nounish they were!

The rare pizza art is certainly eye catching – mine has ants – the MVC is there and the mission is strong: Pizza should be free. How can you argue with that? What I’ve seen from the PizzaDAO crew is a dedication to bringing people together and to making IRL events come to life by providing the pizza, including for my students, and the world at large on May 22. This year there were pizza parties in 122 cities around the globe! Plus, Decentraland, Zoom, Twitter Spaces, and other virtual meetups.
Ok – this is gonna sound crazy but hear me out. What if instead of the United Nations, PizzaDAO takes over the mission of world peace? or rather piece? When was the last time you saw people in 122 cities all around the world join in a collective mission on the same day? Pizza brings joy.
PizzaDAO might be just the ingredient that’s been missing.
