Rodri: The Unsung Hero Poised for Ballon d’Or Glory

Tracing the Evolution of Football’s Most Prestigious Award

As the new football season hits its stride, the global spotlight turns toward the Ballon d’Or—the golden orb that crowns the world’s best footballer each year. In this essay, ahead of the award ceremony on 28 October, we’ll delve into the storied history of this prestigious award, spotlight this year’s top contenders, and make a compelling case for why Rodri stands above the rest.

The Golden Ball: A Brief History

The Ballon d’Or, established in 1956 by France Football magazine, has long been the benchmark for individual brilliance in football. The Ballon d'Or is to footballers what a Michelin star is to chefs. Initially reserved for European players, the award expanded its eligibility in 1995 to include all players active in European leagues, and by 2007, it opened its doors globally.

Over the decades, the Ballon d’Or has mirrored the evolution of football. Legends like George Best, Zinedine Zidane, Kaka and Ronaldinho have all hoisted the golden ball, each leaving an indelible mark on the sport. The past decade, however, has been largely dominated by the duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Their extraordinary talents have redefined what’s possible on the pitch, and living in an era when neither of them is in contention will feel new to most football fans.

My fascination with the Ballon d’Or began in 2001 when Michael Owen clinched the award. Seeing one of our own reach such heights was special as a lifelong Liverpool fan. Owen was more than just a player to me; he was an idol. His blistering pace, clinical finishing, and knack for rising to the occasion made him a hero on Merseyside and a symbol of hope for young fans like myself.

Owen's win underscored the impact a player can have when they combine individual brilliance with team success. It also showed that you don’t have to be the most flamboyant player on the pitch to be recognised—you just have to make a difference when it matters most.

Another moment that stands out for me is Fabio Cannavaro’s triumph in 2006. In a world obsessed with goals and attacking flair, Cannavaro’s recognition shone a light on defensive brilliance. His leadership and impeccable defending during Italy’s World Cup-winning campaign proved that the art of defence is just as worthy of the highest accolades. It reminded me that football is a game of balance, where every role is crucial.

This Year’s Favourites

As we approach the ceremony, four names have risen to the forefront, each with a compelling case for why they should win the Golden Ball this year:

1. Vinícius Jr.: Real Madrid’s Brazilian sensation has dazzled fans and critics alike. His electric pace, skilful dribbling, and clutch performances in big matches have solidified his place among the elite.

2. Jude Bellingham: The English prodigy has been a revelation since his move to Real Madrid. At just 20 years old, his maturity on the pitch, coupled with his ability to influence games from midfield, has made him one of Europe’s most exciting talents.

3. Dani Carvajal: Often flying under the radar, Carvajal’s consistency and defensive prowess have been instrumental for both Real Madrid and the Spanish national team. His contributions on the right flank are vital yet often overlooked.

4. Rodri: The unsung hero of Manchester City’s midfield, Rodri’s intelligence, positioning, and passing range have made him indispensable. His ability to control the tempo of matches is second to none. He is perhaps the most indispensable player to his club in the world right now, as we saw when City struggled in his absence last season.

Rodri: The Midfield Maestro

Rodri is not the flashiest player on the pitch, nor does he seek the limelight. But make no mistake—his impact is profound. Watching him play for Manchester City over the past two years has been a masterclass in midfield excellence. His performances exude a calm authority that anchors the entire team. Every pass is purposeful, every interception timely. It’s as if he has a metronome dictating the rhythm of the game, orchestrating play with an understated brilliance that often goes unnoticed by the casual observer.

His ability to read the game is exceptional. He seems to always be one step ahead, anticipating opposition moves and neutralising threats before they materialise. This level of football intelligence is rare and invaluable, especially in a team that aspires to dominate every competition it enters.

While Rodri doesn’t score many goals, when he does find the back of the net, it’s usually in crucial moments. He has a knack for striking the ball with power and precision from distance, making his goals all the more spectacular. His winning goal in the Champions League final is a prime example, securing Manchester City’s first European title and cementing his place in the club’s history firmly.

The Case for Rodri's Ballon d’Or

Here’s why I believe Rodri should lift the golden ball this year:

The Heartbeat of Manchester City and Spain: Manchester City’s historic treble—Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League two seasons ago was a collective effort, but Rodri was the constant that made it possible. His consistency across all competitions provided the foundation for their success which lead to another Premier League title, as well as the World Club Cup and EUFA Super Cup. Rodri also lead a young Spanish team to a dominant Euro 2024 championship in Germany.

Mastery of a Complex Role: The role of the lone defensive midfielder is one of the most demanding roles, requiring tactical intelligence, physical stamina, and technical skill. Rodri excels in all aspects, making the difficult look easy.

Clutch Goal-Scoring Ability: While not a prolific scorer, Rodri’s goals are often significant. His ability to strike the ball cleanly from distance adds an unexpected threat to his game, catching opponents off guard in critical moments.

Elevating Team Performance: His ability to break up opposition play and initiate attacks allows creative players like Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland to flourish. He’s the catalyst that turns defence into offence seamlessly.

Under-appreciated Excellence: The Ballon d’Or has traditionally favoured attacking flair over defensive solidity. Recognising Rodri would be a nod to the importance of balance in football—a game of both scoring and preventing goals.

The Competition: Vinicius is The Favourite

Vinícius Jr. embodies the joy of football. His flair and fearlessness on the ball bring a spark that’s impossible to ignore. The Brazilian sensation has dazzled fans and critics alike at Real Madrid, using his electric pace and skilful dribbling to great effect. In big matches, he consistently rises to the occasion, solidifying his place among the elite.

Jude Bellingham has taken La Liga by storm. At just 20 years old, his seamless transition into Real Madrid’s midfield, scoring crucial goals and displaying leadership beyond his years, has been nothing short of spectacular. His maturity on the pitch and ability to influence games from midfield have made him one of Europe’s most exciting talents.

Dani Carvajal is the epitome of reliability. His defensive contributions and occasional forays forward have been crucial in Real Madrid’s campaigns. Often flying under the radar, Carvajal’s consistency and defensive prowess have been instrumental for both his club and the Spanish national team. His contributions on the right flank are vital yet often overlooked. He has proven to be a very versatile player, featuring all across the defence for Madrid last year as they dealt with injuries to key personnel. Whether at right-back, left-back, or center-back, Cavarjal can always be trusted to do the job and help his team. A true leader of men in the Real dressing room.

Each of these players has had an extraordinary season, and their nominations are well-deserved. Vinicius is the favourite to win the Ballon d'Or, however it's easy to see that Rodri has had the more complete performances and results for both club and country. Winning the Euros with Spain over the summer might clinch it for him..

Time to Give Rodri his Flowers

Football is often likened to a symphony, with each player contributing to the overall harmony. While strikers and wingers often receive the plaudits, it’s the midfielders and defenders who conduct the orchestra. Fabio Cannavaro’s Ballon d’Or win in 2006 was a landmark moment that highlighted defensive excellence. It reminded the world that preventing goals is just as crucial as scoring them.

Similarly, Luka Modrić’s triumph in 2018 broke the decade-long dominance of Messi and Ronaldo. His recognition was a testament to the profound impact a midfielder can have on the game.

Awarding the Ballon d’Or to Rodri would continue this legacy of recognising the often-overlooked roles that are fundamental to a team’s success.

The Ballon d’Or isn’t just about individual brilliance; it’s about the impact a player has on their team and the game at large. Rodri’s exceptional season, marked by pivotal performances, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, makes him a standout candidate.

Rodri’s contributions deserve to be celebrated. In honouring him, we acknowledge the essence of football.
