Disciples

Continuing in the word

John 8:31

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

When Jesus asked His disciples to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:16-20) what did He mean?

And if a Christian is really just another name for a disciple (Acts 11:26) what does it truly mean to be a disciple?

From our focus Scripture, continuing in His word is what actually makes one a disciple. Put in another way, a true disciple is one who continues in the gospel.

Interestingly, the Greek word translated ‘continue’ means to abide, stay or remain. And so, to continue in His word is simply to remain, stay or abide in His word.

And the number one way of doing that– continuing in His word or abiding or staying in it– is by consistently meditating on it, day and night which involves consistently and constantly speaking and or listening to the word (Joshua 1:8).

Thus, one who is truly and really a disciple of Jesus is one who consistently and constantly meditates on the word. In other words, he or she is one who speaks and or listens to the word throughout the day, every day.
