The coastal winter
wind cuts off my running breath
and it clears my mind

The wind can be brutal along the Dutch coast. Not that it was that brutal the other day when I ran a bit along the coast. It was strong enough to cut off my breath when I was running against it, but we have seen much stronger winds here. So much so, that the Dutch needed to become water management experts. But, that's for the second part of this issue. I really love the beach in The Netherlands. It's nice in summer, but it may be even better in the so-called off-season. A bit of wind, some wild waves, and some quality time spent there, when the wind, even if it's just a breeze, blows your mind completely clear.

Poésie de la vie

They sometimes say, in The Netherlands, that God created the earth, but the Dutch created The Netherlands. Given that at least a third of the country is below sea-level, you can maybe imagine that being great at water management is not a luxury in my home country. The Maeslantkering (Maeslant storm surge) is one of the many impressive feats of engineering to keep the water from reclaiming the land. The video below is a time-lapse of a test closing. Normally, the storm surge will close automatically when the level reaches 3m above it's normal level.
