FIP #193: Introducing Ordering on Farcaster šŸ‘€

Chopan, aka Accountless just created the FIP (Farcaster Improvement Proposals) #193. Letā€™s dive inšŸŒŠ

Whatā€™s Going On?

Farcaster hubs are hitting a wall as they try to keep up with the network's rapid growth. Sync issues are putting the platform's decentralization at risk.

Farcasterā€™s current sync model is struggling. Hubs, which manage user data changes (deltas), are having trouble staying in sync due to increasing data volumes, local rate limits, and missed on-chain events.

These issues slow down sync speeds, create inconsistencies, and make it difficult for apps like Warpcast to stay aligned with the network.

How Could We Possibly solve it?

Sync problems are a big deal for Farcasterā€™s future. If hubs canā€™t stay in sync, the decentralised nature of the platform is at stake. To tackle this, Chopan drops two potential solutions:

Account Ordering: This method gives each userā€™s deltas a sequence number, simplifying the sync process by tracking changes in order. Itā€™s easier to implement and keeps the network decentralized, but it adds complexity in managing sequences.

Global Ordering: This solution involves a central sequencer that organizes deltas into blocks, making sync cleaner and more straightforward. However, it could centralize the network and is harder to implement.

As Farcaster continues to scale, solving these sync issues is crucial for maintaining a (sufficient) decentralised and efficient network. Whether through account or global ordering, the path forward will define Farcasterā€™s future.
