Unlock Protocol has added support for $DEGEN for creators, event organizers, and others building on Unlock Protocol.
Projects launching subscriptions, memberships, events, and other initiatives using Unlock Protocol can now accept purchases and payments using $DEGEN. If you are setting up a paid subscription, membership or event and want to price it in $DEGEN, you can now do so.
As we are seeing community-driven tokens gain broader acceptance and utility, we are seeing increased growth, liquidity, and contributions to a more inclusive (and interesting) digital economy.
Tokens like $DEGEN are reshaping the interaction between communities and economies, accelerating a decentralized and participatory onchain environment. (Here are some great thoughts on this from Jarrod Dicker, TPan and, of course, the /degen channel on Warpcast.)
How to price things in $DEGEN
If a creator or event organizer wants to price their offering natively in $DEGEN, you now have the ability to set up $DEGEN as the method of payment.
When setting up a smart contract with Unlock Protocol, deploy that smart contract on Base and use the $DEGEN ERC-20 as your pricing using the $DEGEN token (0x4ed4e862860bed51a9570b96d89af5e1b0efefed). It will now show its price in $DEGEN.
Here’s what it looks like in practice. It takes about a minute to set up.
Once the smart contract has been updated, we can take a look at how it’s presented for subscribers or attendees who are making a purchase.

The landing page shows $DEGEN as the method of payment, and the checkout flow for this event now shows $DEGEN as the way to pay for the ticket to this event.
Note: Pricing in $DEGEN is not limited to event tickets. Any type of onchain subscription, automatically recurring subscription, or membership can be priced in $DEGEN using Unlock Protocol.

We could! And maybe there’s a public pool or network pool of Degen funds that could be used too. I feel more people would try therapy if their first session or two was free. Help them explore it and learn more. Then maybe see some of those people top up the pool in the future.

I’ve previously concluded that audiences need an incentive to engage with and support creators beyond just “good content” - which Degen in its current form provides. But also, it’s the simplest form of creator tipping I’ve ever seen, making it a smooth and frictionless way to pay for goods.
I don’t know if that continues to be the case if / when the airdrop cycle ends and tipping becomes de-incentivised. But in its current form, it’s an entire creator economy on its own with feedback and benefit loops for both sides of the marketplace.
Love this! I did a deep dive yesterday and reached similar conclusions. 20% total supply devoted to Season 2. February used 4%, so 1/5. Can’t wait to see what March cost and how much the 10K requirement put a damper on things. I think best case scenario is Season 2 allottment gets us through July. 250 $DEGEN
If tipping is expanded outside of the farcaster ecosystem, #1 is in reach At the same time, we might have a hard time convincing the creator economy that “degen” is the right name:)
